It all started when Quinn got pregnant. At first, she and Finn tried to make it work on their own since she wanted to keep it a secret for as long as possible.
The reality of their situation set in quickly. They were teenagers, and while their friends offered support, Finn knew he couldn't take care of Quinn and their baby by himself. It wasn't fair to Quinn, or to the baby.
So when the opportunity presented itself, Finn told Quinn's parents the truth. Via song.
Quinn was pissed at Finn for betraying her, and she was shocked when her parents offered to let Finn move in for a while. She agreed to it, afraid to argue or make another suggestion when this might be the only option to make things work.
The first few weeks were rough. Quinn's father, Russell, had very specific ideas about right and wrong. He wasn't just disappointed in Quinn, he was angry. He disapproved of the pregnancy, of Finn, and most of all, of the mess they had all found themselves in.
Russell wasn't shy about letting them know it, and his disapproval only grew as Quinn's pregnancy progressed, and the tension in the Fabray household became unbearable.
Quinn's mother Judy, on the other hand, was different. From the moment Finn moved in, she was kind to him.
Judy was gentle and loving, and she was sympathetic to Quinn and Finn.
Finn found himself more and more drawn to Judy's warmth, especially in contrast to Russell. It wasn't something he had planned or expected. He knew it wasn't right, but there was something about the way she looked at him. There was no judgment, just an unspoken compassion that Finn had never really experienced.
The more time Finn spent with Judy, the more he began to notice little things. She was encouraging, and would praise him for doing his best, especially after Quinn yelled at him that he wasn't doing enough or helping enough, or being enough.
But it wasn't just Judy's kindness that Finn liked, it was the way she did everything she could to make Quinn feel supported, even when the stress of the pregnancy made her lash out at Finn.
Judy stood by Quinn, no matter what. She didn't care what her and Russell's friends would think, and she didn't care about anything other than the happiness and health of Quinn and the baby, and Finn.
One evening, after an intense argument between Finn and Quinn, Finn found himself sitting in the living room, thinking it over.
Judy entered the room quietly, as she always did, and joined Finn on the couch.
"I talked to Quinny." Judy began. "She's just overwhelmed and upset about everything."
"I'll go check on her soon." Finn promised.
Judy nodded slowly. "You know she doesn't mean to take her anger and frustrations out on you."
"I know." Finn nodded back.
The truth was, he couldn't explain what he was feeling-he didn't even know himself, but he knew he wasn't upset about how Quinn treated him.
"I know it's hard." Judy continued, her hand gently resting on Finn's shoulder. "But I'm here for both of you."
Finn furrowed his eyebrows. In that moment, he realized he felt something more for Judy than just gratitude. As the realization clicked, he could feel his cheeks turning red.
It didn't matter because he would never act on anything like that. He wouldn't betray Quinn, especially not now. He wasn't even sure if Judy saw him that way.
But the crush was there, something Finn couldn't ignore.
Things got worse between Quinn's parents as the pregnancy progressed. Russell's disapproval became more than just disapproval, and he and Judy began fighting more and more.
Eventually, Russell moved out.
The house was quieter after that, and Finn noticed how Judy seemed to withdraw, despite her attempts at hiding it for Quinn's sake.
It was then that Finn realized the full severity of his feelings. He wasn't just drawn to Judy's kindness, he was also starting to see how much she had given up for Quinn. How much she had sacrificed to be there for her daughter, even when things weren't easy.
Finn admired that, and he wanted to be that for the baby. His daughter.
Finn wasn't sure how to handle the situation, but he didn't want to let his feelings cloud his responsibility to Quinn and their future.
Finn would never act on his feelings. He knew they were inappropriate, and he didn't want to hurt Quinn.
Besides, he didn't want his daughter seeing her dad and grandma get together. And when he thought about it like that, he knew he couldn't be the one to traumatize his kid.
The baby was the one thing keeping Finn from doing anything stupid or impulsive.
So Finn kept his distance from Judy, trying to keep things normal, but it wasn't easy. The more frustrated and agitated Quinn became, the more he wanted to talk to someone else. Finn tried confiding in his best friend, but Puck's advice was terrible- something about Judy being a total MILF and Finn being wrong and Quinn being right.
After that, Finn kept his mouth shut. He didn't talk to Puck, Judy, or Quinn about anything that was going on. He had thought about talking to Rachel since the entire glee club watched her throw herself at Mr. Schue for a week so he knew she wouldn't judge him, but he decided against it because he didn't want Quinn to find out.
Finn couldn't keep pretending. The stress of Quinn's pregnancy and the guilt of his crush were both only getting worse, their weight getting heavier and heavier.
Finn decided, possibly against his better judgment, to get ahead of it and be honest.
After all, his honesty worked out when he told the Fabrays about Quinn's pregnancy.
"Hey." Finn said, exhaling slowly as he approached the blonde. "I need to tell you something."
