"I can feel his breath as he's sleeping next to me,
Sharing pillows and cold feet,
He can feel my heart, fell asleep to it's beat,
Under blankets and warm sheets.
Oh what I wouldn't give to be in that bed again.
If only it were me, instead of her"
Courtney slowly swallowed a hard lump in her throat as she opened the front door to the church where the ceremony was being held. She had been shocked to hear it was being held in a church. Gwen and Duncan were a lot of things- but they were not religious by any means. When Courtney had brought up the idea of having their ceremony in a church, he had snorted and called the idea "ridiculous" and "corny" and insisted that if they had it anywhere, it was in Geoff's backyard. Where he could be close to booze at all times.
So when the wedding invitation had showed up in her mailbox one faithful afternoon, and clearly stating it was being held at West Field Church, she nearly fell out of her chair.
But no, the where isn't what had her blood run cold, and a slick sweat form above her brow. It was the who. Gwen and Duncan. Gwen and Duncan.
They were getting married.
To each other.
And they had invited her.
Courtney had opened the letter, addressed to her. Ready to pick up her phone and dial Bridgette's number and scream at her for not mentioning they were getting married before, when the names-written in elegant cursive writing- burned into her eyes.
"You are formally invited to the marriage of Duncan Evans and Gwendolyn Myers. Held at West Field Church, Toronto. Attire is black tie wear, and the ceremony will begin at 5PM on June 4th. Cocktail hour will be held in the reception room. Please, come and watch these two exchange their love and become one family,"
At first, Courtney could only stare. Soon she felt her eyes begin to blur, as they filled with tears. Married? Surely they had only sent her this invitation to be rude. As a way of Gwen to say "haha, he choose me! Not you!" It seemed like some sick joke. But sure enough, Celebrity Manhunt did a special on it later that day.
It was real. This was really happening.
Duncan was getting married to Gwen. Not her. This wasn't right. This wasn't how every thing was supposed to go. Duncan was supposed to be marrying her! She was supposed to be the one with the wedding ring on her finger. She was supposed to be dressed up in all white, as she walked down the isle. Spending her honeymoon with him in Paris.
She was supposed to be marrying Duncan.
Courtney had crumbled up the invitation and thrown it into the trash. Never wanting to read it again. Just wanting to get the whole thing out of her mind, she went upstairs and got ready for work. But all day all she could think about was the wedding. It was clawing it's way into her mind. She tried her best not to picture the honeymoon.. Them growing together. Them having a family together.
Duncan being more happy with Gwen, than with her.
"Does she watch your favorite movies?
Does she hold you when you cry?
Does she let you tell her all your favorite parts,
When you've seen it a million times?
Does she sing all your music?
While you dance to purple rain?
Does she do all these things, like we used to?"
