"I bet

This time of night you're still up,

I bet,

You're tired from a long hard week,

I bet,

You're sitting in your chair by the window,

Looking out at the city,

And I bet,

You still wonder about me,"

Courtney hugged the letter close to her chest, happy tears threatening to spill over her lids. She pulled it back and read it again, for the third time. Just to be sure.

She had gotten in. To Harvard Law School. She had made it. She got into the school of her dreams. Even after everything she had been through in the past year. Things were finally starting to look up.

"I'm so proud of you," her Mother said, giving her daughter a teary eyed smile. Courtney returned the smile and shook her head

"I just can't believe I made it," she whispered. She squealed and spun around, hugging her Mother close before running upstairs to her bedroom. Beyond ecstatic to share the news.

She closed her door, her cheeks beginning to hurt from the smile she was wearing. She ran over to her bed and grabbed her phone. She sat down, letter in her hand and scrolled through her contacts. Wondering which one of her friends she was going to call first-

The slow, tiny ache began in her stomach. Courtney's smile faltered a little and she slumped her shoulders a little as realization hit her like a truck. Her hand fell into her lap, her phone laying open in her hand.

Courtney looked around a little at her room, swallowing hard. Her eyes fell back onto the letter as she realized.... She grabbed her phone with the sole intention of calling Duncan first. To tell him the news. He had always rooted for her to get into this school so badly.

She blinked a little when she blew out a long breath, knowing his name was no longer in her phone. She knew she couldn't tell him. She couldn't tell him any big news anymore. He wouldn't answer anymore..

Would he?

Courtney opened her message app and began typing in his number, still knowing it by heart. She bit her lip

Hey, I know it's completely out of the blue, but I just wanted to let you know I got into Harvard! I'm so-

Courtney cleared her throat and shook her head, sighing as she deleted the message before even finishing it.

Tearing up this time for a different reason, Courtney closed her phone and set it beside her on the bed. She grabbed her letter and held it close as she laid on her side, curled up with her knees to her chest.

She imagined what he would say if they were still together. How he would react. Imagined his voice. Imagined him hugging her so tightly she could barely breathe.

Courtney sniffled a little when she realized he was probably doing those very same things with Gwen now. Being excited and proud of her for getting into her dream school.

Imagined Gwen opening her acceptance letter and running upstairs to her room to call Duncan. Crying in happiness and getting to hear his voice tell her how proud he was of her.

Courtney sighed.

"And I just wanna tell you,

It takes everything in me not to call you,
