Courtney smiled weakly as she watched her little brother open his gifts with such excitement, you'd thought someone had spiked his eggnog. It was early Christmas morning, about 10:00. And the whole Taint family had been woken up by Courtney's little brother-Jax- super early so he could rip open the many presents he had gotten from family members.
Courtney yawned a little, she had stayed up late last night talking to her long-time boyfriend Duncan on Skype. He was currently at his grandparent's place on the other side of Canada. The two had made plans last summer to spend Christmas together, that he would book a flight to her city and spend Christmas break with her and her family. She was beyond excited, seems how she hadn't seen him since the two went to college. Her to Oxford, him to NYU. Almost completely different directions.
When there's an ocean between you, things tend to get a little complicated when it came to planning visits. Duncan had gotten on his flight to visit his grandparents about 3 days ago. And was supposed to be on another flight on his way to see her right now.
However, the snowy Canadian winter seemed to disagree with their plans, and decided to throw a shit ton of snow their way the night before his flight. Cancelling it.
So now, she was stuck at her parents place, all alone, without Duncan, on Christmas.
"Woah!" Jax cheered with glee. Breaking Courtney out of her depressing trance and looked at him as he opened his last present. It was a new gaming system.
"Thanks Dad!" he said. Courtney's Dad winked at his son, and looked over at his daughter. He saw her sitting on their leather couch all alone, and shot her a sad smile. He knew how much Duncan's absence was bothering her.
This would be the first Christmas they weren't going to see each other since their relationship started over 3 years ago.
"Courtney dear, would you like some eggnog?" Courtney's Mother asked her daughter, walking over to her wearing a gorgeous red sweater dress. Holding a cold pitcher filled with the thick liquid. Courtney shook her head gently
"No, thanks. But I think I'm just gonna go to my room," she mumbled. Grabbing her own presents and excusing herself from the room. The house smelled like gingerbread and tinsel. Their 10 foot high Christmas tree was standing magnificently on the foyer of their house. Courtney didn't want to look at it. Christmas just didn't seem right without Duncan.
Courtney took two steps at a time, and quickly rushed down the hallway and threw her bedroom door open and slammed it shut behind her. She gently sat her presents on the vanity by her window and sat on her bed with a sigh. She pulled her legs to her chest and sat her chin on her knees. Courtney squeezed her eyes shut and swallowed hard.
She had gotten a decent amount of things for Christmas as well. A new pair of gorgeous diamond earrings from her Mother, a new Rolex watch from her Father, a homemade sweater from her grandmother.
It's not that Courtney didn't appreciate the gifts, she loved them. It was just hard to find the glee in anything without Duncan there.
All Courtney really wanted for Christmas was him.
Things just didn't seem right without him here. The lights weren't as bright, the carols people sang weren't as enjoyable, the snow seemed colder. The smells of the season gave her headaches. It was all just so... Gloomy without Duncan. Everything was so much better with him there.
Courtney blew out a breath and fished around in her jeans pocket to find her phone, she grabbed it and unlocked it. She smiled faintly at the message Duncan had sent her when she woke up this morning
Merry Christmas Princess, I love you
Courtney's smile slowly slid from her mouth as she sighed and turned her phone back off, she threw it on her bed and put her head in her hands.
Merry Christmas Duncan... I wish you were here.
It was about 11:50 at night when Courtney's eyes slowly fluttered open from her sleep. She must have passed out sometime after talking to her grandparents on the phone for about an hour. She yawned a little and slowly sat up in bed, rubbing her eyes she looked out her window. The snow was falling steadily, making the ground and air look silver. Mixed with the moonlight, it was actually kind of pretty.
Courtney slowly stood up, shivering a little when her bare feet touched her cold wood floor. She scuffled over to her large window, and looked out. Watched the snow fall ever so slowly, Courtney looked at her clock. In a few minutes, another Christmas would be in the past. The first Christmas without Duncan.
Courtney suddenly felt a strange feeling in the back of her head, and out of instinct, she looked back out the window. She noticed something moving in the night, a dark figure walking towards her house between the falling snowflakes. Courtney's heart picked up it's pace, as her eyes slowly widened. She wasn't sure how she knew it, but she just did.
Duncan was down there.
Throwing on some boots, Courtney rushed downstairs and threw open her front door. She ran down her front steps, and squinted against the harsh winter air that blew at her face. Blowing her brown hair back from her face, making her cheeks red. It was freezing out, but she didn't care.
She knew it was Duncan. But as soon as his green mo-hawk came into view, she couldn't help but let out a small yelp and run towards him.
She threw her arms around his broad neck, and snuggled her face into his warm coat. He smelled like smoke and musky cologne. It was Duncan. Her Duncan.
"You made it," she whispered against the fabric of his coat. He chuckled and wrapped his arms around her waist, holding her close. He breathed in her scent.
"I wouldn't miss a Christmas with my Princess for anything. Even if my flight was cancelled. I drove straight across Canada to see you. I'm just happy I made it," Duncan said into her hair. Courtney squeezed her eyes tight. It was beyond freezing out, she wasn't wearing a coat. But the warmth she was getting from his embrace was warmer than any coat she could ever have.
"I love you," she whispered, pulling back slowly to look into his gorgeous teal eyes. He smirked
"I love you too," he whispered back. He pulled her close and kissed her roughly on the lips as the clock stuck midnight. He had just made it by minutes. Duncan really had made it in time before Christmas was over.
The two remained locked in each other's embrace as the sounds of Christmas faded around them. Suddenly those lights seemed much more bright, those carols seemed like the most beautiful songs they had ever heard. The sweet smells of the Holiday made them smile.
Christmas was finally Christmas again.
Courtney had gotten what she wished for. Suddenly all those presents she had received this morning seemed to small, so unimportant now.
Because Duncan was the best Christmas present she could ever wish for.
