Unplanned Surprises

Her whole life, Courtney Taint always had a plan. For everything. Every day, she'd wake up and write out a plan for the day. It would usually be something like:

First wake up, second take a shower, third get ready for school, etc.

She even knew what she was going to make for dinner in 2 weeks. What she'd need to buy at the store, how much money she'd need. How many hours she'd have to work in order to get that money.

Courtney just planned everything. To the very small details.

The only thing she had never planned, was falling in love with a criminal. She never planned on one day marrying this guy either. She didn't plan on waking up next to him every morning. She didn't plan on standing in front of him as the two spoke their vows to one another. She never planned any of it.

Yet, here she was. Sitting on their couch, cuddled up. While watching reruns of his favorite show. Her wedding ring glinting in the light from the TV.

"Ugh," Duncan rolled his eyes, as the show went to a commercial "I hate reality TV shows. They're so stupid," (Oh the irony)

Courtney whacked his arm gently, stirring slightly as she laid in his lap "Don't mock my Housewives of New York City." she said. He snorted

"They're so uninteresting, it's the same old shit every episode. Someone talks bad about the other behind their back, there's a giant blow up. Then they're all 'friends' again," Duncan said blandly. Courtney giggled

"They're very entertaining. It's my favorite one, next to The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills."

Duncan stared at her "How many are there?" he asked, horrified. She laughed and slowly sat up. Duncan rubbed his eyes

"Hey while it's on a commercial, I'm gonna get something to eat. You want anything?" He asked as he slowly stood up, his work shirt still covered in oil stains. She rubbed her chin

"Actually, I've been craving pickles for some reason, do we have any?" she asked. He shook his head

"You're so weird," he mumbled as he walked into the kitchen

"You married me!" she called after him. She heard Duncan shuffle through the kitchen, and heard the microwave open and shut. She knew he was making popcorn.

A few minutes later he walked back in. Carrying a steaming bag of popcorn in one hand, and a jar of pickles in the other. Courtney perked up as he sat down next to her, she grabbed the jar out of his hand and he chuckled as he watched her unscrew the lid like her life depended on it.

Courtney set the lid down and looked into the jar, the pickle juice swashed around. The smell lifting to her nose. She felt her stomach churn suddenly. Making her feel nauseous. Her face paled and she felt spit forming in the back of her mouth.

Duncan watched her fly a hand to her mouth and she set the jar down, and rushed upstairs. He stared after her, a brow raised in confusion.

"She's so weird," he repeated quietly to himself, and leaned back in the couch.

Courtney barely made it to the toilet in time before whatever she had for lunch came racing back up her throat. She threw up roughly into the toilet, and she groaned. Sitting down on the floor beside the toilet, letting the wave pass over her. Once she knew she was okay she flushed the toilet and stood up. She wiped the sweat from her forehead and washed her hands in the sink.

She had just opened the cabinet to grab her toothbrush when Duncan knocked gently on the door frame,  he looked at her

"You alright there?" he asked, she smiled weakly

"Yeah. Guess the pickles must have been bad or something. I'm fine now," she said as she turned the water on to brush her teeth. Duncan slowly walked over and kissed her temple once before leaving again.

Courtney slowly looked at herself in the mirror as she began brushing her teeth, her mind beginning to race. What if she.... No. No, she couldn't be! Every time they had sex they made sure they used protection. And she was on the pill. She wasn't pregnant.

She wasn't

Courtney chewed nervously on her thumbnail as she paced back and forth in their large master bathroom. Her eyes darting to the small white stick that was sitting on the toilet seat.

It had been two weeks, and those random feelings of sickness hadn't let up any. And she was late.

The moment she realized she was over a week late, she grabbed her keys and rushed to the nearest drugstore. To buy a pregnancy test.

Duncan was at work, he would be until about 7.

So many thoughts were going through her head, as she paced. Were they even ready for kids? Would Duncan even want any? Sure, they were married. But they were still young. Only 23. With two around the clock jobs, she wasn't sure they'd even have time for a kid.

Her timer on her phone went off, signaling that it was time to check the test.

Courtney held her breath, and slowly looked down at the test.

Duncan sighed as he pulled into their driveway around 7:30 that night. He was exhausted, his work shirt yet again covered in oil from working in the shop all day. His back was killing him, from being hunched over looking at many car's engines. He slowly pulled his wedding ring out of his pocket and slid it on. Duncan took it off only when he knew his hands were going to get dirty.

Duncan opened his door and got out of the truck, he shut and locked it before walking up the front steps to his and Courtney's house. He pulled his key out of his pocket and unlocked the front door and went inside.

"Honey, I'm home," he sang jokingly. Duncan walked in and saw Courtney sitting in one of the chair in the dining room. He smiled lovingly at her

"There's my girl," Duncan said as he walked over, and gave her a big sloppy kiss on her forehead. She giggled a little and smiled up at him. He smiled back and opened the fridge

"You want a beer?" he asked her, she slowly shook her head

"No," she said. He shrugged and grabbed one for himself, cracking it open and taking a long sip. Duncan slowly looked back at her

"I really need a long, hot shower," he sighed. Courtney slowly stood up and sashayed over to him.

"Can I join you?" she purred into his ear, Duncan slowly smirked at her

"You know you don't have to ask," he drawled back. Duncan set his beer down and took her hand gently. The two walked upstairs, a sly smirk at both of their lips.

Once they reached the top of the stairs Courtney and Duncan went into their bedroom, and she walked over to the dresser while he walked into the bathroom to start their shower.

Courtney kept smirking to herself, even more so when she heard him suck in a breath in the bathroom.

"Uh...." Duncan stuttered as he slowly walked out of the bathroom "Sweetheart, what is this?"

Courtney slowly turned around to see he was holding the pregnancy test in his hands, his eyes were huge and he was staring at her.

Courtney shrugged casually "Oh yeah," she smiled at him "I'm pregnant,"

Courtney had never seen a grown man faint, until that moment.
