"On the first page,

Of our story,

Our future seemed so bright,

Then this thing turned out so evil,

I don't know why I'm still surprised,

But you'll always be my hero,

Even when you've lost your mind,"

The first time it happened, it had came as a shock. One moment in time she could never had imagined she would have to experience. Especially coming from the man who claimed to love her with all of his heart.

There was a ringing in her ear as her hand slowly touched her cheek, the sore jawbone throbbing from his fist. She had stumbled back in shock once his fist connected with her face. She had grabbed the edge of the shower to keep herself from falling down. There was a steady ringing in her ear, loud enough that it muffled Duncan's panicked words.

"Oh god! I'm sorry! I...Fuck!" he cursed, tears in his own eyes as he tried to comfort her "Courtney, baby," he reached for her but she flinched away. Giving him a death glare

"Stay the hell away from me. I need space.... Stay.. away," she croaked and rushed past him and locked herself in her bedroom. Duncan banged his fist on the shelf and yelled a round of curse words.

Courtney kept listening to his pleas of love and regret as she weakly crawled into her bed. She began to shake, as the reality of what had just happened sunk In

Duncan had just.... Hit her. Physically punched her in the jaw...

Courtney began to sob, shaking even further as she tried to hide herself among the sheets. Covering her ears with pillows to block out Duncan's pleading voice in the bathroom.

This was the first time it had ever happened. He had never done something like this before. He must have just had a super hard day at work and accidently took it out on her.

He loved her. He would never do this to her on purpose.

That wasn't the Duncan she married.

They would go back to normal and act like nothing even happened by the morning. It was a one time deal.

He loved her.

Right?

8 Days Later

Courtney sighed as she worked hard at the library to finish up a final project due that period with her lab partner, Trent.

"There's still so much to be done," Courtney sighed, slowly taking her coat off. Trent looked over and blinked at the heavy bruises lining Courtney's throat. As through something had choked her.

"Court....You okay?" he asked, starting to feel real worry for his friend. She nodded a little and shrugged it off

"It's nothing, lets get back to work," she said.

"You said it was nothing when you had that bruised jaw last week too, seriously Court. Are you okay? Are you and Duncan-"

"Are we what?" Duncan asked, suddenly standing behind the two. Glaring at Trent. Courtney stiffened

"Babe it's nothing. He's just helping me with this lab report," she said, trying to get Trent the least amount of trouble from this situation

"Oh really, cause it seems to me that he's sticking his nose into business where it doesn't belong," Duncan snarled. Courtney swallowed hard.

It had came in waves it seemed. All the rage. The anger. The abuse. The short temper.

"Baby come on, I can finish this work at the dorm," she said grabbing his hand and pulling him up. Trent watched as Duncan led her away aggressively. His teal eyes never leaving Trent's the entire way.

"You're fucking him, aren't ya?" Duncan growled as he paced around Courtney as she stood in the middle of her bedroom.

"You're being ridiculous. You know I only love you. Why would you even ask that?" She pleaded. She tried to keep herself from shaking, her nerves crawling their way up her spine. She tasted bile in the back of her throat. Duncan slowly turned and looked at her, she flinched as he reached up and pushed the hair out of her face. His eyes slowly trailed down and latched onto the light discoloration on her jaw. It had begun to turn yellow. An ugly stain across her usual beautiful complexion.

"I love you too." He whispered. Courtney slowly began to relax, but then his fingers gripped her chin, forcing her to look up at him. The softness gone from his eyes, replaced with that unprovoked rage she was getting horribly used to seeing

"But if you ever talk about our business in front of other people again, you'll regret it," he hissed. Courtney yanked her face away and turned away from him. Walking into her bathroom and slamming the door, she locked it and slowly leaned against the wood. She began to hyperventilate, her breathing unsteady as tears lined her eyes. She slowly looked up and stared at her reflection. Her hand slowly reaching up to brush against the bruises on her throat.

She was absolutely terrified.

But it wasn't the violence that scared her, no.

It was the fact that she knew he could hurt her as badly as he wanted, and in the end, she would still love him.

That's what scared her the most.

As she looked at her broken reflection, she asked herself a question.

What was more insane?

The fact that he thought hitting her was okay... or the fact that she always apologized for getting blood on his shirt?

"There's gravel in our voices,

Glass is shattered from the fight,

In this tug of war, you'll always win,

Even when I'm right,

Cause you feed me fables from your hand,

With violent words and empty threats,

And its sick that all these battles,

Are what keeps me, satisfied,"
