Virgil was crushing, hard.
He hated it. He knew he'd never have a chance with the male he liked, he was almost convinced that male was straight. He always had a girl hanging on his arm, who would kiss him, and his arm was always around her waist, they were a couple. It was obvious.
However, what Virgil couldn't see was that the male he liked, that he stared at in every class they shared together, was indeed gay, he was gayer than a rainbow, but he hadn't the heart to tell the girl that loved the popularity that came with being with him.
Virgil noticed the way his eyes lit up when theatre came into the conversation, or how he would always turn to his best friend and rest a hand on his shoulder whenever he got excited, the way his clothes were always immaculate, and he was confident, in himself and in the situations he was in. He noticed how the corner of his mouth would turn up whenever he heard something funny, that he shouldn't have found funny, and the way his gaze would never fully meet anyone else's.
Virgil loved watching the other male, it always gave him something to focus on, other than the negative thoughts in his head. He'd seen the way his posture was always perfect, and the way his hair was always neatly swept over to one side. Or the way he was always so kind to everyone, despite being the most popular male in school, his girlfriend being the most popular female.
Virgil didn't like the girl his crush had, not just because she was with him, but because there was just something that made him uneasy, it may have been the way she'd threatened him when she'd caught him staring at the male across the room, or it may be the fact that she wore too much makeup and perfume, and it wasn't even a nice perfume, maybe it was that her and her girlfriends would giggle at everyone that walked past, like they were some comedy show. She was also rather stubborn and stuck up, if she didn't get her own way, she would stamp her foot, and whine, or she wouldn't back down in an argument, even if she knew she was wrong. She was just the kind of person that radiated annoyance.
Virgil was sat with his friend, Patton, in the cafeteria one lunch time, talking about the upcoming Valentine's Day dance when it happened, Virgil turned to stand up, talking to Patton as he did so, the other male facing the other way temporarily, to collect his bag, when the popular girl walked past, carrying a try full of food, that she was never going to eat, and the two students collided with each other, the food landing all over the female, causing her to let out a frustrated screech, telling Virgil he was worthless and useless, and he was always in the way.
The commotion had attracted the attention of a few teachers, and him. Virgil opened his mouth to apologise when the nuisance opened her mouth and screeched to her boyfriend, "Look at what this stupid emo did to my thousand dollar outfit."
"I'm sure you have more." He spoke, a monotonous tone to his voice, almost as if he'd repeated the phrase a thousand times, and he rolled his eyes, which Virgil noticed, and smirked to himself, looking at the floor, that not had food scattered all over it.
"No, I don't this was one of a kind. From Paris! I'll never get anything like it!"
"It'll wash" He spoke with a calm voice, avoiding eye contact at all times.
"Baby" She whined, "You're supposed to be more sympathetic."
"How can I be sympathetic when you tell me the same thing every day? You say someone has ruined your "one of a kind" outfit, that you'll "never be able to replace." Have you ever heard of a washing machine?" Virgil smirked to himself, feeling the presence of his friend behind him.
The female groaned and stomped off, probably to the bathroom to call her "daddy" who will buy her a new outfit, again.
The male sighed, which caught the attention of Virgil, who looked over at him, and sent him a small, sad smile.
When he received one in return, he and Patton left the cafeteria, hoping they didn't get blamed for anything that happened.
In the library, Virgil sat with a book in his lap, and his legs draped across Patton, who was, for whatever reason, laying with his legs over the back of the sofa and his head almost on the ground.
"You will get light headed if you remain in that position," A voice spoke to Patton, gaining the attention of both of the males.
Patton pushed Virgil's legs off him, causing a groan to escape his lips and Patton spun around, hoping him being upside down hadn't distorted his vision.
Virgil smirked at Patton, who had lost his voice due to the male in front of him.
"Nerd are you..." The voice of a second male trailed off as he noticed the two males on the sofa. "Done?" he finished.
Virgil wiped the smirk off his face, and turned his attention back to the book he was reading.
"No, I am not done, does it look like I have concluded my task?"
Roman groaned, and sat on one of the beanbags next to the sofa Virgil was sat on.
"Patton, correct?"
In response, Patton nodded.
"If you would like to, would you accompany me to the Valentine's Day Dance?" He spoke robotically, but it was clear the other male was nervous.
Once again, Patton nodded, still unable to find his voice.
"Satisfactory." And with that, the two males that were with Patton and Virgil, walked off, leaving them alone again.
Patton turned to Virgil, a huge grin on his face, but before either could say anything, the bell, signaling the end of lunch, rang.
The two males parted, each sat in their classes, thought occupied and resulting in them not knowing what was going on.
Virgil walked home alone, which he normally did, his headphones on, music playing, allowing him to walk home without being disturbed.
The evening went the same as any other would, he ate the bare minimum, showered, and went to bed. Despite hating school, he would rather be there than home, and Patton always had theater after school, which meant he was unable to see him after school.
The next morning, Patton didn't show up at Virgil's door, and Virgil didn't see him at lunch, or in any classes, which meant he was either sick, or avoiding Virgil.
During lunch, Virgil pulled his book back out, and read, until someone sat down next to him, he wasn't sure who, nor did he care.
"You're Patton's friend, right?" a familiar voice spoke, causing Virgil to turn and look at him.
"Mhm" he muttered, in response, unsure of what else to say.
"Well, he's sick today, although I'm guessing you already know that."
"Well that was one of two options, yeah..."
"The other being?"
"He was avoiding me."
"I doubt he would do that, but he didn't tell you he was sick?"
"No."
The two males fell into a semi-awkward silence. Allowing Virgil to eat some more of his candy hearts.
"So I was uh, wondering, if you'd like to go to the dance with me? I know you'll ask what about my "girlfriend" but I broke up with her, I couldn't maintain a lie any longer. I'm not straight, and you're adorable, and I had noticed you staring at me a few times."
Virgil blushed, and looked at the candy heart he was holding, it read "YES" and he handed it to the male beside him, before standing up, and getting ready to leave.
"Wait, Virgil."
"Yeah?"
"Thanks." He popped the candy heart into his mouth and waked off, leaving Virgil to try and wrap his head around what had just happened.
Despite Virgil not enjoying school, and his best friend not being in, he had scored a date for the dance, and it just so happened to be his crush, which meant, he had a lot to talk to Patton about later.
