Roman and Virgil were laying on the grass, staring up through the tree leaves, they loved the others company, and they were great friends, though it was uncertain how they'd become that way.
They were kids, maybe 6, and they had been neighbors for as long as they could remember.
"Roman? Virgil spoke, his eyes shining with worry.
"Yes?"
"We will be friends forever, right?"
"Forever and always."
---
"Patton, I can't tell him. He'll hate me, I don't want him to know." Virgil rushed out.
"He will be fine, Virgil, he's your best friend, he'll be kind."
"I doubt that."
Later that day, Roman went up to Virgil, and spoke to him.
"Virgil, you are my best friend, I don't like you that way."
"Yeah, I know... I didn't want Patton telling you."
"So, we're okay though, right?"
"Of course, best friends forever and always, right?" Virgil cringed at the memory as he reiterated the words Roman had said to him from eight years prior.
Roman smiled and the two went off to lunch, Virgil ignoring the aching in his chest.
---
That evening, when Virgil got home, he felt the tears fall, he'd held back all day, he hadn't wanted Roman to see him break down. Nor had he wanted him to think he was trying to make him feel guilty.
To relieve the pain in his chest, he headed to the bathroom, and pulled out the razor.
He took a deep breath and slid the blade down his wrist, he bit his lip to ensure he didn't cry out from the pain.
He did it a few more times, before washing up and removing any evidence of what he had done.
---
One morning, Virgil was waiting for Roman, and he didn't show up, however, once Virgil made it to school, he saw Roman across the hall. His heart ached, and he went to find Patton.
"Roman didn't wait for me this morning..." He spoke, and he thought he saw a flash of guilt in his friend's eyes.
"He's started spending time with Logan, outside of school. I guess, he's doing it in school now too."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"He asked me not to! I'm sorry!"
Virgil's eyes filled with tears and he excused himself, rushing to the bathroom, not paying attention to where he was going.
He crashed into someone.
"Sorry." He muttered, going to help them with their things, as he handed them their papers, he saw who it was and his heart lurched. "Roman..."
