I Miss You

"Mommy I'm excited!"

Your three year old daughter Macy says as she walks into the airport with you, holding onto the bottom of your dress. Her twin brother Jacob was asleep in your arms.

"I'm excited too babygirl"

You answer as the three of you make your way into the airport. Today your husband and his flight were coming home from deployment in the Middle East. You hadn't seen him in almost a year, and now you would see him in a few minutes. You find the overseas exit and watch people reuniting with their families or bustling about their day. As you were sitting there you noticed other military families waiting too. The second you heard someone cheer, you knew they were back. The camo uniforms also gave you a hint. You look for Jacob in the crowd as Jacob Jr. climbs down and stands next to his sister. The two of them suddenly sprint off.

"Macy come back!"

You yell sprinting after her. You look frantically for your children until you freeze. Seeing them in his arms warmed your heart. He looks up and smiles, giving you a nod as if to say you weren't dreaming. You run to him and he catches you, picking you up and spinning you around.

"Jacob I missed you so much"

You say shedding a few tears.

"I missed you more, you can believe that"

He answers, face buried in your neck. He rubs your back gently as you stand in a comfortable silence, your kids hugging your legs.

"I missed you guys"

He says again. Your kids leave to play with some of the other kids, giving you the chance to talk to Jacob alone.

"Where's Mark"

You ask looking over his shoulder to see the flight gate. His arms still wrapped around your waist, he rubs your sides with the pads of his thumbs. When you look back at him he has tears in his eyes.

"He didn't...he didn't make it"

Your heart broke for him. Mark and Jacob had been friends for a really long time, and you knew him well enough.

"I-I'm so sorry"

"I miss him, but at least I have you and the kids"

"Of course"

You say engulfing each other in another hug.

"It feels so good to have you in my arms again"

He whispers kissing your neck before pulling away.

"Let's go home"

He nods as you call the kids over and start leaving. Jacob carries Macy while she catches him up on all the latest events of her preschool class, while Jacob Jr goes back to sleep in your arms.

"He's a Mommas boy for sure"

Jacob smiles at you, making you smile back.

"Daddy are you listening!"

Macy interrupts turning his face towards her.

"I'm listening sweetheart"

She smiles and continues her rant about how people kept taking the littlest pet shops from her so she got in time out for smacking someone.

"My girl"

Jacob high fives her. You roll your eyes. How could one of your children be so hyper and the other 100% lazy. Anyways you finally made it to the car and drove home. Macy somehow managed to talk the entire drive, and Jacob Jr was still asleep. That evening you had your first family dinner in a long time. You let the kids stay up later so they could watch a movie with their dad while you washed dishes, which you were currently doing now. Distracted by the setting sun in your kitchen window, you were shocked out of it by his muscular arms wrapping around your waist.

"I put them to bed, well I put Macy to bed...Jacob was already asleep"

You chuckle.

"He sleeps through everything, just like his dad"

You smile at nothing in particular.

"Are you happy"

He asks suddenly, making you stop what you were doing entirely.

"What"

"Are you happy...only being together months at a time, me missing so much of your lives, is that really what you want"

"Jacob I-"

"Because that's not what I want anymore. I wanna be her for you and the kids, I missed you too much to leave again"

He smiles down at you placing a gentle kiss on your forehead.

"I think you'll be happy to know that was my last deployment"

Your jaw drops.

"Your not leaving again"

You ask in shock.

"I'm not going anywhere"

You hug him tightly.

"I love you"

"I love you too wifey"

He answers making you smile into his chest.
