Katherine

I stand on top of the rocks, looking at the sun setting. Kaleb sits next to me, eating grapes. He offered me some but I declined. I haven't really been eating good.

"Remember when we were seven years old, Father brought us here and told us the first rule for battle?" I asked Kaleb finally.

"You had your hair in pigtails and you were wearing a pink dress while I had on a blue shirt and black slacks." Kaleb smiled slowly. "And he took your hair out of the pigtails because it made you look vulnerable."

"What was the rule?" I looked at my brother.

"Never forget who the enemy is."

"And I have done exactly that." I sighed.

"What are you talking about?" Kaleb frowned.

"Cheryl. She was my enemy once, dated Brian, I almost shot her. And I let my guard down and she abducted my kids. Chase, I knew he was a bastard, seen the way he moves. He's a snake and I let him see my vulnerability. I am constantly letting my guard down and allowing people to fuck me over."

"Katherine." Kaleb whispered.

"Father taught us to track down, beat and kill whoever dares threaten us. Mother taught us how to be professional about what we do. And what have I been doing? Playing mother and wife."

"Katherine. Don't do that to yourself. You're no different than you were all those years ago, love."

"Really? Because that enormous beast kicked my ass up and down that room and you know it."

"We've all gotten our asses kicked at least once in battle, sister. Doesn't make us weak, doesn't make us pathetic. It gives us a chance to better ourselves for the unrealistic amount of danger in this bloody awful world." Kaleb informed me.

"Kaleb, I'm losing myself." I shake my head.

"Are you fucking nuts? Seriously? Have you gone mad, sister? Yes, you are a wife and the mother of three amazing little cubs...but Nobody made you the face of this organization for a reason. You are the best fighter, hunter, trained lethal killing machine I have ever seen. Better than myself, better than Mum and Dad. And it wasn't because of the constant training we endured as children. I've seen you do things we weren't even taught. You have made yourself powerful. You did. You fucking did. It's not about you being off your game. Sweetheart, you're getting older. You're starting to see that's there a life outside of guns and blood and the screams of your enemy. And that is okay. I thank the Lord that you're starting to see that because you can finally and truly be happy. It's about time. You deserve it more than anyone. So take it, honey. Grab it while you can because there will come a day when you can't cheat death and by then it'll be too damn late."

I processed what he was saying.

"Don't lose that head of yours, Kathy. Your the best on the team. We need you." Kaleb continued.

I nodded slowly.

"I got your back. Every step of the way. No matter how many times you kick my ass, threaten me, insult me...I'm always here because we are fucking family. And family sticks together no matter what."

I smiled slowly. "And then Dad gave us our first knife that we would later wedge into dummies for hours at a time."

"And Mum was furious that he gave it to us without her. You immediately knew how to handle yours. I barely knew how to hold it."

"Legend has it, I kicked your ass in the womb." I laughed.

"You wish, bitch." Kaleb smiled.

Do you guys think that Katherine and Kaleb's upbringing was harsh and wrong? Or do you think that it was necessary in order to make them into who they were?

Idk how I feel about Izzy and Alex together yet.
