April fool's
---
"Oh Jester, you're so kind," I say while wiping his paint covered face with a wet towel I found. Those other princesses really are good with this paint. "If only Gunther was half as kind."
"Right," He says while slamming his fist into his other hand, "you are secretly courting him, correct? I can not see why, but then again, I am not a princess."
I chuckle, "Yes, well," I hum and continue, "I like sneaking out of the castle on quiet days. It makes me feel...excited, well, you see, Gunther found out and got really protective. He threatened to tell father even! I'd be in so much trouble if father knew I left the castle without telling him, let alone without some form of escort. So, as a compromise, Gunther agreed to personally accompany me on my adventures."
"I feel like Jane would be a much better fit, don't you think?"
I nod my head, "Yes, but Jane would go to father. She's very kind and sweet, but sometimes her need for justice is too much for me to bare. It's admirable and I'm thankful that she is that way, but sometimes I just want to be a kid, you know? Not a princess in need of protecting all the time. That's what Gunther gives me."
"You do realize that if the King finds out Gunther will be in a lot of trouble?"
I nod my head again, "I am aware and I will take full responsibility, for it is my fault. No one deserves to get in trouble for my mistakes."
"Why don't you just ask Sir Theodore or Sir Ivan to accompany you?"
"I'd love to, but they're so busy all of the time and I don't want to bother them."
Jester nods his head, "So you drag Gunther instead?"
"What can I say?" I shrug, "I'm not all that selfless."
"I guess you are more like the other princesses than we thought."
"Jester! Don't you dare!" I curse while waving my hands around like a damn fool.
He let's out an almost evil laugh, before sighing, "Shouldn't you get to bed? You'll be in trouble if you don't, correct?"
"Possibly...but I'm really not in the mood to sleep right now. I want to stay out here and enjoy the garden. You can go ahead though, Jester, I can get back on my own."
He hums, "I don't know about that, my lady."
"Go," I say while waving my hand, "I'll be in bed before Sir Theodore or Sir Ivan come this way on their patrol. Don't worry one bit."
"Alright, see you tomorrow, my lady."
I roll my eyes, "See you, Jester."
"Muah, muah," I hear behind me whenever Jester walks behind a corner. I jump and turn around to see Gunther, the ever teasing dimwit. "Are you and Jester courting?"
I sigh, "Possibly, he is cute, right?" I ask with a sly smile forming onto my lips as i make my way over towards my boyfriend.
Gunther chuckles, "I think that I will need something to compare him to."
"Well of course, I think Rake is cute too. So is Pepper and Jane, but in different ways."
"I think Jane is more brutish than cute," Gunther says, "she's very aggressive."
"As expected of a squire."
"Are you calling me brutish?"
"Possibly."
"You wound me, princess."
"Would you like for me to bandage you up?"
"A kiss should do."
"Only if you want your head cut off."
"The price is fair, I think."
I giggle, "Maybe one day, when we're older."
"How much older? You'll be set to marry in a few years."
"Marry who, though? I see no man worthy."
"Oh maybe that young man, Jester?"
"Jester? That would be just a splendid idea!"
"Let's go ask him now," Gunther says, but despite that he gives me a nice smile and pulls me in close. It's nice to be able to joke around with someone like this. People typically walk on egg shells around me due to my status as a princess, but not Gunther. He's very comfortable around me and I really like that.
"Princess (Y/n), is that you?" I hear and shove Gunther away from me so I can look at Sir Theodore who has a torch in hand. He is approaching us swiftly with his other hand behind his back, "Should you not be asleep at the moment?"
I take a glance towards Gunther—who is dusting dirt off of himself after I pushed him just a bit too hard—for a second before nodding my head, "Yes, but I just couldn't fall asleep. I went for a walk and ran into Gunther. He's going to be taking me back to my room, is that OK?"
"Make it swiftly, you both have busy days ahead of you," He says while walking towards the practicing yards. I let's out a deep sigh.
"Sorry about the push," I say while offering a hand to wipe off anymore dirt from him. He raises his hand up to stop me from dusting him off.
"You'll get dirty, a pretty face like yours should not have to worry about me."
"Yes, I suppose you are correct. With my gorgeous face I shouldn't even be seen with you."
"That is quite hurtful, my love," He says as the two of us make our way into the castle to my bedroom. Right now the bedroom next to mine is occupied by three princesses from a neighboring kingdom who are here for the ball tomorrow night. If any of them see me with Gunther my father will be furious, for many reasons.
"Sorry, my love," I mock back, "the ball is tomorrow night, my dress is just stunning. I can not wait for you to see me in it."
"I'm sure you will look more than stunning. You'll wow the whole ballroom."
"Yes, of course I will. I'll catch the attention of any possible suitors."
"I guess I'll have to fight them off."
"You have enough strength to fight off any suitor tenfold. Let's not jump straight to fighting, though, do that could get your squireship revoked."
Gunther nods his head, "Any consequence I get for it would be completely worth it if it means that you're safe."
"My suitors would not harm me."
"Safe as in you are only mine. I'm not one to share, you know."
"Don't be so cheesy, Gunther." I sigh, "we're at my room now. It is time for me to be off to bed then, you make sure to get lots of rest as well. Have fun at the ball tomorrow night since I will not be able to attend with you."
"Of course, I'll dance with the fairest maiden in the land."
"And I'll dance with the most handsome gentleman. The two of us will fall in love and elope. Doesn't that sound lovely?"
"Super, my maiden and I will kiss under the moonlight and get married on the spot."
"But Gunther, we are only twelve!"
"We can never be too young to marry our love. Goodnight, my lady."
"Goodnight, squire," I say with a short curtsy before heading into my room.
