Chapter 8
On the walk to the truck, Charley sniffed Melody. "Your scent is getting stronger. Make sure you use the spray." The truck was loaded with large metal things Melody had no idea what they were used for. "We have to tarp the truck then we are hitting the road."
"I think I can do it better this time. At least it will be easier, I have an idea of what I have to do."
Charley went behind her to check if the straps were tight enough. "You are getting better, I only had to tighten them up a little. We are going to have to toughen you up, so you don't need me going behind you."
Once in the truck Melody settles in. "Can I put the radio on?" Charley nods go ahead. Melody started humming with the songs on the radio.
"You seem to be in a good mood today."
"I am. I didn't fall tarping the truck, and I have wonderful company."
"Thank you, ma'am." They were outside the city and the morning traffic. "We are on the main highway to San Antonio. It will take about ten and a half hours to get there if we don't run into any traffic jams."
"Is that why we left this early?"
"No. I called my brother last night. Told him what is going on and asked if I could bring you with me. He wants to meet you before he decides what is the best action to take. Once he sets up transportation, he will call me and meet us in San Antonio."
Melody's eyes widen and her hands shake a little, "If he doesn't want me around, I-I-I will be fine. Tell me about some of your stops and I will pick one to get out of the truck. If you don't mind me riding along a little longer."
Charley saw the tears running down her face. "Melody, no matter what he says I am staying with you. As long as you want to stay with me. If you want to leave that's fine as long as I know you are safe being alone."
Her tears got worse. "I don't know how to thank you for all you have done for me. I have caused you a lot of trouble and now I have to give you some more good news for me but bad news for you." Charley stared at Melody not understanding what she meant. "My wolf is coming, in twelve hours or less. This is my first shift, she said I will need room and privacy."
"You haven't shifted yet?" He couldn't believe that she smelled like a wolf. "You don't get that smell until your wolf shifts."
"Not yet, I only turned 18 three days ago. I'm sorry for causing you even more problems."
Charley studies her face, not sure she is telling him the truth. "That's not possible, you had to have shifted. When I met you, you had a light wolf smell, this morning your smell is much stronger. I have never heard of someone smelling like a wolf without shifting."
"I can't explain it, all I know is that she said she is late because of what I was going through and where I was. She also said that we will be surprised when we get to see her. I think she is very strong. Not most wolves can help you heal before you see them."
"What do you mean heal. Were you sick or did you get hurt?"
"I told you my brother and father didn't like me. When they were in a bad mood, I was their punching bag. A lot of the pack members followed suite and hit me for the hell of it."
"That is some pack you come from." Charley's anger is coming back, "I wouldn't mind taking on your father or brother for doing this to you."
Seeing how upset Charley was, Melody tries to calm him down. "I am safe right now and I have you by my side. Everything is going to be fine."
"You're right. First sign of you shifting tell me. We will have to pull off the road and find someplace private."
"I will, we have time don't worry." The rest of the day Charley keeps looking at her waiting for her to start shifting.
