Chapter 18

On the road part one

"We are out of San Antonio and heading down the road."

"Charley, I don't know how to thank you for everything you did for me. You are a very special person."

"Don't say that around too many people, they might believe you."

Melody was laughing a real laugh. "You are so silly, where are we off to now?"

Charley let go of the steering wheel, rubbing his hands together. "New Orleans, Louisiana. It will take about eight and a half hours to get there. The best part of this stop is the food. Next to Italian food, Cajun food is my favorite."

"That food is too hot, Charley, how can you eat that stuff."

"Have you ever tried it?"

"No, but I heard about it."

"We will get there later tonight, get a room and spend a couple of days."

"You're driving, I'm just coming along for the ride." The truck was locked in the relay station by nine fifteen. "Will the truck be safe here?"

"It is fine. This is a protected lot. See the security guard. We need a taxi and to head to town."

"There is a Taxi stand over there."

"Just what we need." As they drove through the streets, everyone was dancing around in the most unusual costumes. The scene was lively and colorful. "For tonight, I want to share a room with you. Just in case they are following us, we don't need to take chances."

Melody nodded as she kept watching everything going on around them. "Some of these costumes are wild."

"You wouldn't find me in some of these outfits."

"This is the hotel you wanted to come to." The driver pulls over in front of the hotel.

"Thanks, here." Charley handed him some money.

"The streets are crowded, if we get separated, I might lose you."

"Stay close then, if I lose you go back to the truck." In the hotel it was quieter. "I have a reservation under Charles Hinze."

"Yes, a double on the fourth floor." She passed him the key.

"Why is it so crazy out there? The Mardi Gas isn't for a few months."

"You're right, ma'am. This is to celebrate New Year's Eve. The party starts two weeks before New Years and ends a week after."

"We came at a good time. Rooms, then we have to find a place to eat, I am hungry."

The two ran upstairs giggling. In the room Melody eyed Charley and then the bed. "Those beds are a little bit short, Charley." Charley glanced at the bed then tried it out. His feet and half of his calves are hanging off the end of the bed. "How are you going to sleep like that?"

"You get used to places like this, they are all the same. I want food, it is late maybe we should order room service."

"I don't care. I am kind of tired." Charley got in a pair of shorts and a T-shirt while Melody put on sweatpants and a hoody.

"Melody, this air conditioning isn't that strong aren't you going to be too hot."

"I don't mind the heat. The hoody is soft and baggy." Charley rolls his eyes at her silliness and tries to get comfortable on the short bed. Watching him laying there, he looked so ridiculous, Melody couldn't help laughing.

Poor Charley woke up stiff in the morning. "Next time I get a room I need to tell them I need a king size bed."

Melody was stretching listening to all his complaints. "You're that stiff because you are getting old." That got a pillow thrown at her. "Hey."
