Chapter 25
"Let me start from when I first ran into her. I was in California when Melody came right up to my truck and asked for a ride. I don't pay hitchhikers any attention, so her asking didn't bothered me. When I lifted my head to see her, I saw how scared she was, her face was red from crying. I had this feeling about her, I can't explain why I told her to come on. I just couldn't leave her standing there."
"I always knew you had a good heart, Uncle Charley. So none of that surprised me."
"Let me go on. While we were driving, I watched her looking over her shoulder and jumping at sounds around her. I had to find out what was going on. We had a long talk once she was comfortable. What she told me had me calling your father."
"Okay, tell me what she said."
Cameron tapped the pen in his hand. "What I am going to tell you isn't something that should of happened to anyone. It isn't our place to go into details. We can give you the basics, she will have to fill you in on the rest. Charley, you tell him."
"I will make this as simple as I can. Her mother left the family when Little one was ten. Her father and brother turned against her taking the pack with them. She was treated very badly and that is an understatement. Her father being the beta of the pack is what made it so bad."
"All that because her mother left them. That sounds ridiculous."
"Things got even worse when she turned eighteen. The alpha's son was her mate..."
Anthony growled, "She is my mate."
"Relax. He told her he wanted her, and they mated. The next morning, he informed her he was rejecting her, and she had to accept it. He told her she had to stay in the pack as his mistress or breeder, whatever you want to call it. If she didn't they would keep her in the dungeons and she would have to give him pups, whether she liked it or not. Then he told her she couldn't raise them, his chosen mate would."
"This is why when she saw me, she was so scared of me."
"She is afraid you will reject her or hurt her. She tricked them, ran as fast as she could, found me, and here we are. There is so much more to her story but like your father said it is up to her to tell you."
"There is a few things as the future alpha of this pack you need to know." His father becomes stern when he comes to this part of the conversation. "You cannot repeat this to anyone. There is no better way to say this than straight out. She is a gifted wolf."
"Anyone that hears her play knows that, Dad. How is that a big secret?"
"That is not what I am talking about, Son. When she shifts her wolf is light silver and glows. That's not her gift, she can heal with the touch of her hands. She saved Kody's life right in front of us."
Anthony goes still, then rubs the back of his neck. "You're telling me that not only is her old pack looking for her, but the rest of the werewolf community will want her too."
"I never said they were after her."
"You didn't have to, Dad. I saw her and even if he was stupid enough to reject her, he wasn't going to let her go. What pack is she from?"
"She won't tell us." Charley says. "When we were in San Antonio, TX, they almost caught us. Your dad was there and helped get us out of there."
"Why were you there, Dad?"
"The only way to keep her out of the pack, was to make her a member of our pack. There is one more thing you need to know, and it is going to be hard to take. Melody fainted yesterday. When we took her to the hospital, they told us she was pregnant."
"Fuck, she is pregnant." He felt like he was kicked in the gut.
Seeing how torn up his son was, Cameron walked around his desk to be closer to him. "I talked to my friend on the werewolf council. He has no rights to the pups. He rejected her while she was pregnant. That means he rejected the pups also. If you take her as your mate before they are born, by law they would be your pups. He would have no claim on them."
"You keep saying them."
Cameron pats his son's shoulder. "You were listening. She is having twins. This is a lot to handle, and the decision is totally up to you."
Charley quickly adds. "I know it is up to you to decide if you want her, but she has been hurt by so many others over these last eight years, I don't want you to decide before you have had time to get to know her. Just talk to her, if you don't see what your father and I see in her then reject her. You are her second chance mate. Most of us wait years to get a second chance mate if we get one at all. The Moon Goddess was so disappointed in her first choice she wanted to give her a strong and compassionate mate; that mate is you. You can protect her, but more importantly you could love her."
"This is not easy." He looks from his dad to his uncle. "Could you love a child that isn't yours?"
"That is an easy one for me." Charley grins. "I already do. There isn't one being out there that can tell me that my Little one isn't mine. I love her as I loved my own girl."
"I can't decide anything without talking to her. She might not want me after everything that happened to her. What will happen to her if I reject her?"
"That I can't answer, Son. Two rejections after everything else and being pregnant. It will take a toll on her."
"Call her back here so we can talk."
Charley mink links her. "I am not getting any answer. I bet she is sleeping. Why don't we go to my place it might be more comfortable." The three arrive at a quiet house. "I will go up to her room and get her."
He knocks on her door, when she doesn't answer he opens it and sees she isn't on the bed. Looking around the room he sees a paper on her pillow.
"Dear Papa Charley,
I have done nothing but give you problems. I didn't mean to, I'm sorry. You have done everything to take care of me and love me. Something I needed. I cannot stay here and hurt my mate, having him watch me have another man's pups isn't right. The other thing I can't do is take you away from the pack you love and loves you. It's a special place; they took me in and treated me like I belonged and cared for me.
That is why I am leaving; I will not hurt them, and I will never hurt you. As for my mate he can just reject me, I understand. I lived through it once; I'll live though it again. I have two little lives counting on me, so I have to. Please forgive me and don't worry, I am strong. Harmony and I will take good care of the pups and ourselves. The only regret I have is that they lost their pop-pop.
Love Always
Little one'
Charley is getting angry as he is reading the letter that he is squeezing tight in his hand. "How can she think this way." After finishing the letter, he runs downstairs, "She's gone!" He gives them the letter.
"She couldn't have crossed the border yet. I would have known it." Alpha Cameron says. "I will mind link the guards and have them look out for her. Don't worry Charley, we will bring her back."
"Dad, since she is my mate, wouldn't it be easier for me to track her?"
"Yes, her scent is easier for you to pick up and follow." Anthony strips and shifts heading out the door with his clothes in his mouth.
Cameron is worried about Charley he has gotten so pale. "Charley, he will find her."
"I can't lose anyone else, Cameron. My heart won't take it."
