Chapter 62

Melody was holding a sleeping Hope. "I will be right back; these guys need to get to bed." Melody along with her trusted nannies carried them upstairs. Carley followed behind.

Bonnie felt relaxed in the other's company, like she was a part of things. "I wanted to thank you for making me feel comfortable being here. It means a lot to me. Melody and I have been close for a lot of years, I have missed her so much."

"You two were friends when I was still at the pack. I appreciate you being her friend when I wasn't there. I would like to thank your mom too."

Bonnie listened to the sounds coming from the nursery, "Her voice is so calming and beautiful. She sounds like she did when she was younger. I thought she would never sing again after what Michael did."

Papa Charley asked. "What did he do?"

"She didn't tell you?"

"She doesn't talk much about what happened."

Bonnie sounded disgusted. "He choked her so bad that she couldn't talk for at least six weeks. All because she was singing in her room. The basement of the pack house. He was not nice to her, that is the politest way I can put it. The list of horrible things he did to her is so long. We tried to stop him, no one would help not even the Alpha. All we could do is take care of the aftereffects."

Melody was coming back down the steps, her foot stepped on a little car, she grabbed the rail, stopping herself from falling. "Be careful you don't want to break your leg again. Hell, your father really messed that leg up, the doctor told you to be careful, it would never be as strong as the other one."

"Your father broke your leg!" Laurie sounded so shocked and mad; she spit as she said the words.

Melody glared at Bonnie. "It was an accident."

"The hell it was, he broke your leg on purpose to teach you a lesson. All because you didn't move fast enough. He pushed you until you fell. When you got up, he took a wooden bat and smacked your leg until he heard it crack. I am not going to lie for that worthless wolf."

"Bonnie!" Melody tilted her head toward her mother.

Bonnie's whole body slumped. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't of said anything. I get so mad at them, that my mouth starts running off on its own."

Laurie was in Frank's arms crying. "I am sorry I wasn't there. Bonnie, thank you for helping her."

Melody wanted to make the incident seem a little better. "Do you remember what your silly mother did?"

"That stupid pink cast they put on your arm, we drew pictures on it. Mom set it in a batch of cookie dough and baked you a cast. She slid it over the pink cast so you could eat some whenever it got itchy."

"Those were some of my best times. The doctor ordered me to stay with you and your mom for a month." Melody teared up, not able to fake it anymore.

Bonnie held her. "You're safe now. Please don't cry or I am going to fall apart. Come on, Chica Pea, we are stronger together."

Melody held Bonnies eyes in hers. "I'm with you, Chica Chee." They realized everyone was looking at them. "I'm sorry it has been a long day, and I must have been more tired than I thought." Melody wiped her tears away.

Laurie was still crying. "It's all my fault he did that to her."

"It isn't your fault at all. He was a mean man, no one could change that." Bonnie says with conviction. "This is all my fault, I should of left the past in the past. We can't change it, and you don't need to relive it. I should of kept my mouth shut. Please forgive me."

Papa Charley is sitting there mad and sad at the same time. He saw the reports but never completely understood what it must have been like for her so young, hurt and scared. "It is getting late why don't we call it a night."

Melody stood up. "That is a good idea, Bonnie has been driving for days she should get some rest. I will see you after rounds tomorrow. Papa Charley, will you take her back for me?"

"I am going that way I'll take her back." Cameron got up and pats Melody on the shoulder. "It will be alright, I promise. Come on, Bonnie, you look plum worn out."

Bonnie got up, hugged Melody then Laurie. "I am sorry."

"You have nothing to be sorry about. Go get some sleep, tomorrow if you want to come for lunch, Melody will be working. I live across the street. Alpha Cameron will point it out for you."

"I'd like that. I promised to take two pups for ice cream and a toy. If you can come, I could use help."

"I'd like that."

Melody was tired as soon as all the company went home, she went to bed. Sleep came quickly, though her dreams were torturing her. Times her father mistreated her kept repeating over and over. She tossed and turned. She remembered the time he was so mad he grabbed her and threw her down the basement steps, breaking her arm. That memory flowed right into another where he kept kicking her yelling "You don't call me Father!"

She could hear herself screaming, "Stop, I am sorry."

Anthony came in the house as quiet as he could. He heard Melody screaming, fear ran through him. He was in their room and held her trying to calm her. "I'm here, you're safe. Open your eyes, see it is me. Please stop screaming."

After a few deep breaths Melody realized she was in her room and safe. "Anthony, how did you get here?"

"I couldn't stand to be away from you, so we left as soon as the meeting was over."

Melody wrapped her arms around him and held on like her life depended on it. "It is so much better when you are here."

"What was the matter? Why were you screaming?"

"Bonnie came and mentioned things from the past and it got to me. Some of my past is really painful to remember. When you are here I feel safe and the memories don't come around."

"I won't leave you again." Anthony picked her up and laid her in the middle of the bed with his arms wrapped around her.

"I heard screaming, what the hell is wrong?"

"I'm sorry I woke you, Papa Charley."

"She had a nightmare. Something about her memories."

"It was probably all the talk after dinner tonight about her past. Bonnie told us about some of the shit that asshole had done."

"Whose Bonnie?"

"Anthony, can't I just stay here in your arms and go back to sleep? We can talk in the morning."

"You take care of her, Anthony. If you need me call." Papa Charley left the room feeling helpless.

"Come on, Melody, go back to sleep. I'll be here with you all night. I promise I won't leave."
