One snowy morning, one that I had been waiting for, David called me on Skype. I had done my hair and even put on a little makeup. When I answered, I saw that he had gussied up as well. He was trying to hide a grin and I smiled warmly.
"Looking lovely as always, Princess."
"Why thank you Charming. To what do I owe the pleasure of your call?"
"I don't suppose you know what today is, do you?"
Of course I knew what day it was, but I played along anyway. "Saturday I do believe."
"Yes, but I was wondering the date?"
"Let's see... the 14th?"
"Of?" he prompted.
I put a finger to my chin and nodded, "February. Yes, Saturday, February 14th. Is that important for some reason?"
He couldn't hold it in any longer, he burst out laughing and I joined him. "Happy Valentine's day!" we said in unison and I beamed as we gazed into each other's eyes. He put his hand on the screen and I did the same. I imagined I could feel the spark that always happened when we touched and yearned for him to be here again.
"I love you Angel."
"I love you David." We waited in silence for a few minutes before he finally pulled his hand away.
"I have something for you," he said, turning out of the frame for a moment to grab something.
I fingered the guitar I had sitting next to me, "Me too."
"Me first." He bit his lip and looked down at what he was now holding. "I know it's really bad and the video quality will make it look even worse, but I've been working on it for a few weeks and I guess it's alright now. I'll send it to you, I would've earlier but I just finished it yesterday." He took a deep breath and held up a piece of paper.
I gasped and my hand found it's way to my heart, "Oh, David, I love it." It was a drawing of us saying our first I love yous with our star in the background, but this one was different from the others he had done. This one had color and it was so detailed I could have sworn it was a photo.
"You were so hard to get right, I could never make it perfect. It always felt like there was something missing and then I realized, it was the stars in your eyes." I looked closer at the eyes and noticed fine pinpoints that really did add something I had never really noticed about myself, but obviously he did.
"Thank you so much," I breathed. "You are so talented, you'll have to teach me your ways one day."
He smirked, "More Squiddy lessons it is." He set down the drawing and waited patiently for me to continue.
I gripped the neck of my guitar and plucked one of the strings nervously, "Unfortunately, what I have for you isn't something that I can send you, but I hope you like it anyway." I rolled my chair back a bit and pulled the instrument onto my lap. "I tried to write an original but couldn't for the life of me, so I took lines from other songs and threw them together."
"Copyright!" he teased.
I rolled my eyes and strummed a chord to make sure it was in tune. "This is what I think the journey of our relationship has been." I let some hair fall in front of my face because I didn't want his reactions to distract me.
I had practiced this numerous times, but was still nervous I would mess it up. I poured as much feeling and emotion into my voice as I could muster. Each line brought back a memory of a time when we were together, and the end described what I imagined our future could be like. When I finished, I waited a few moments before looking up. He had been silent the whole time which I had expected would happen, but what I didn't expect was to see his phone pointing at me.
