"You know why your mom left hell, don't you?"  Reyna asked Daniel.

"Conflict in hell."

"She left because she's not like hellish demons. She is interested in human and desires peace. Most of all she cares about you."

"And that's why she sent me here." Daniel said, seeming slightly sarcastic about it.

"Exactly. Because I can teach you to control your magic better than she can. She sent you here because she wants you to survive. You won't be a threat to yourself or others. Do you understand Daniel?"

"Yes..."

Reyna's stern gaze melted to one of pity. "You miss her?"

"Yeah."

"Then work hard. When you're ready, we'll go visit her. Alright?"

"Yeah."

At the age of 12 Daniel started to develop his powers. His mother had always struggled with her control of magic so she decided to contact a friend of hers. Reyna, a witch specializing in her study if dark magic and demonic culture, agreed to take Daniel on as her student.

His mother hoped he would get control of his powers and be able to blend into human society, something she had accepted she could never do.

"30 minutes." Reyna told Daniel. She was a strict teacher. Over the last two years Daniel had focused on his magic control and flow.

First it was directional. When he expelled magic he'd try to hit a target. Most vesper burst like a bomb, standing in the center of the radius. Daniel made a straight line with his shot.

Then it was control of the flow. Release it slowly over the course of a long period of time. Don't just break the dam, empty it slowly so there isn't destruction.

And finally funneling it into other objects. Most vesper could give their magic to others or use it on enchanted items but around 70% would just be lost to the environment. Daniel could control himself enough that almost 80% of his magic would stay (20% lost).

Daniel held his hands on either side of the vase. It was able to hold and store mana. Reyna used it to power herself when she was going to attempt a large spell. Apparently she was able to process the demonic magic, he never asked her about it.

"What is this test for?" Daniel asked. Reyna had said it was a final test but he didn't know what for. He was suppose to drain about 60% of his magic over the span of 30 minutes. For comparison that would be like asking a human to free fall at 5mph. It was something you couldn't control, something that was impossible. But Daniel could after two full years under Reyna's tutoring.

"I'm going sending you to school." Reyna answered.

"What?"

"Focus, your magic swelled."

Daniel looked at the vase and took a deep breath, slowing the rate. "You're my teacher, why do I need school?"

"Human school. To learn math and history. You'll learn to blend into human society. You can't live here with me forever, after all. You'll need to merge with the others to survive in this realm." Reyna explained as if this was a casual topic. Daniel was trying not to panic.

"How do I explain the way I look?"

"Melanism."

"I don't know what that is."

"Think of it as the reverse of albinism. You have melanin at strangely high rates for a human. It causes your skin to look grey. You could use it to excuse your eyes and hair too. The ears will have to be hidden with magic but it won't be the first time I've made you hold a spell all day. And they won't be throwing tennis balls at you while you do it."
