Cherry and Kassim
Kassim had been married to Cherry for around a month now. Cherry hadn't pushed their romance since Kassim needed time to settle in but he knew that excuse wouldn't work much longer.
They were taking a break for now. Kassim was laying on the bed with his head in Cherrys lap. He was reading a book and she was entertaining herself by messing with his hair. What could he say, it felt good. Not only her actions but being pampered and living in a safe home.
"Cherry?" Kassim looked up at her once he closed his book. She'd been very adamant on him not calling her by any titles.
"Hmm?"
"I need to tell you something important." Kassim had to come clean before they got in too deep. "I'm sorry if this hurt you but I'm aromantic. I don't feel love, I'll never love someone."
Kassim knew about Cherrys fairytale dream. She'd once confided in him her plans to marry a simple man and run away to live a peasant life. Since she couldn't get that she did the next best thing. She brought a man from a simple life to her. Love was supposed to be the consistent thing between the two but it was not.
Kassim grew a little anxious in the lasting silence between them. Cherry had a mostly blank face, she was processing those words still. He could see she was thinking and detected a well hidden hint of sadness.
"You'll never love?" Cherry finally spoke.
"That's correct." Kassim wasn't going to give her any false hope with a flimsy answer.
"I see."
Kassim pushed himself up and turned so he was facing her sitting rather than in her lap anymore. He didn't want to trap her in if she wanted to leave.
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be. It's not your job to love me. I was expecting a lot when I hoped a randomly selected man would care for me. I always knew it was unlikely to happen." Her voice was a little weak at the end.
"I-I do care about you though!" Kassim quickly interjected. "I want you to be happy and I want you to succeed. I just don't love you. It's friendship instead of romance. I really care about you Cherry."
He'd grown close to her over the last month. She was always open and truthful with him. She listened when he just wanted someone to listen and she did anything she could to help him settle into the palace. Most importantly she helped bring a greater meaning to his life and she trusted him.
"If it makes you happy, I won't be upset if you have a lover." Of course he wouldn't. The only thing stopped that was their wedding vows which had felt entirely fake to the both of them.
"It wouldn't be the same." Cherry wasn't very interested in a secret lover. If she truly loved someone she didn't desire to hide it. "Would it bother you if I loved on you?"
"What?" Kassim wasn't quite sure what she meant by that.
"If we still slept in the same room. If I hugged you or maybe kissed you on the cheek. I wouldn't ask for anything in return."
Mothers kissed their children too, it wasn't so odd was it? "That's okay with me." Kassim agreed. If it made Cherry happy, he could certainly get used to it.
"Thank you." Cherry smiled. It was a sad smile but a genuine one. Kassim knew he'd singlehandedly shattered one of her few dreams that had nothing to do with politics. He didn't feel too guilty for it, though, because he couldn't change his sexuality.
