Rin nuzzled a bit closer to Theo and tightened her arms around his waist to make sure he was close. They had both finished work and Rin just wanted to cuddle with him for a bit. His head was tucked under her chin while she held him comfortably close. They hadn't talked much, they were just enjoying their time alone.
"Is everything alright?" Theo asked Rin. He had that nagging feeling that something was bothering her. Queen Cherry's words came to mind. 'Rin won't tell you if something is wrong. You just have to ask her.'
Queen Cherry care for the servants was admirable. She was a good queen! Theo knew that she would do all she could for Delyrian people.
Rin loosened her hold on Theo so he could move back a bit and look at her.
"I'm technically a calico, you know." Rin said. That was a strange thing to say. Rin had once mentioned in a side comment that Calico cats were rare in neko and that only females could have calico coats but said little else. Both Elyse and Jennel were calicos."Are you? I don't know the definition of one." Theo admitted. He knew her cat was almost all black with a little color.
"Yeah. There's brown speckles on my chest and I have some white on one of my toes. That makes me a calico." Rin said. "You just can't tell so everyone says I'm a basic black fur."
"I like your fur." Theo said, reaching up and gently touching her ear. He'd learned that Rin liked the occasional ear scratch but only allowed him to touch her. Elyse had been the one to tell him to do it. Apparently Rin had a problem with people petting her most of the time but Theo was the exception. "It's kind of fluffy like the fur around your neck. It's really soft too. Is there something wrong with having black fur?"
"No. Not really." Rin said.
"But...?" Theo felt that wasn't all she had to say on the matter.
"Just something said at the clan meeting bothered me." Rin said.
Wild hybrids lived in groups called clans. Most of the time there were clans of each species but sometimes they mixed. In big cities like the capital, they would have clans that were more like a club. There would be meetings every week. Some hybrids went to each and some only went once a month. It wasn't anything important but they'd chat or run out in the forest by the edge of town. It helped them with their wild instincts and stopped them from growing restless. It was also a good place for hybrid children to learn to control their shifting.
"What'd they say?" Theo pressed her for information. He wanted to know what was bothering her.
"I heard a couple of the other neko my age talking about Elyse. About her rare coat and her amazing cooking. I guess I got jealous..." Now that she said it outloud she felt stupid. Rin leaned closer to Theo and gently rubbed her cheek along his chest and neck again. She'd explained it to him before that scenting him was something calming to her. Rubbing against him or cuddling with him would spread her scent on him as well as his on her. It was a mutual claim of sorts.
"I could learn to cook if you really wanted me to." Rin said. She still was resting her head on his chest and was just gazing off towards Elyse's side of the room.
"You don't have to if you don't want to. I can cook." Theo said. He didn't do it often at the palace but he knew how to. "And I don't care if you have a rare coat. I like how you look. And the black hair and fur really make your eyes pop."
Rin smiled slightly before she leaned up and placed a kiss on Theo's cheek. "You always know what to say. Thank you."
"You're welcome." Theo said, feeling a familiar heat rise to his cheeks from the kiss. He felt he'd never be able to accept a kiss from her without blushing.
Rin noticed the blush and smiled though decided not to tease him about it today and rested her head down on his chest again. "I love you bell boy."
"I love you too Rin."
