Levi's POV:

My birthday was tomorrow. I had fully intended on spending it alone. But today, Jean asked me to come over. Somehow we became close even though we're polar opposites. Bonding over our lost loves was the root of it without a doubt.

I came out from my room in all black as usual and heard my mom on the phone with someone. She didn't seem to happy.

"Go out with his family. I'll cancel the reservation...oh really? Because it seems like you've been choosing him over this family lately...of course I look at Eren as one of my own but let's not forget how this is affecting your actual brother." I figured she was talking to Mikasa. I cleared my throat to make my presence known. "I'll talk to you later." She hung up the phone and held the bridge of her nose.

"What happened?"

"I made a reservation at a nice place for me and her tonight for her birthday and she said she's with Eren." She sighed.

"Why wasn't I invited?"

"Because you're going to Jean's."

"But she's with Eren, what's the difference?"

"Let's go." Her mood changed and she seemed as happy as ever. Why avoid the question? Maybe she doesn't think I'm comfortable going somewhere other than school or the house or a friend's house. I followed her to the car as she drove towards Jean's neighborhood. We were about 7 minutes away.

"Does the thing with Mikasa and Eren bother you that much?"

"I should never be against my own child but yes. I love Mikasa and Eren. But what they're doing is not right. She tells me how she's upset that everyone's been avoiding her for nearly a month. But what did you expect? This has hurt you and Jean drastically."

"I didn't think they cared for me that much." I was genuinely shocked. To be honest, I always felt like a side kick. I was either Mikasa's brother, Hange's best friend, or Eren's...whatever. Never just 'Levi'.

"They do, sweetheart. They think you're wonderful."

"How?"

"Well, Hange calls me on the phone at least once a day so she gives me all the details." She reached a stop sign and winked. I groaned and rolled my eyes. "Do you know what her family life is like?"

"Not really, why?"

"Ask her about it." She seemed slightly worried. Could something be going on in Hange's life that I don't know about? Then again, she's always just listened to me, she's never told me about her problems. I just assumed she didn't have any since she's so happy all the time. We pulled up to Jean's house. She kissed my cheek and told me to have a good time. Good time? It's just me and Jean, we'll probably just play one of his bullshit video games. I left the car and walked to the front of the large house. I knocked on the door to be greeted by Jean.

"Took you long enough." He smiled.

"I'm literally early."

I walked in and all the lights were off. I followed him to the kitchen but then he disappeared. 5 seconds later, the lights turned on with everyone surrounding the kitchen counter.

"Surprise!" Everyone yelled in unison. Sasha popped confetti towards me while Connie stupidly shot it at himself. There was a banner above that said 'Happy Birthday Levi!' in black and white. In the center of the counter was a cake that read the same thing. It was also white with black candles and black frosting. It was something that warmed my heart. They must've known about my hatred for color.

"Thank you." I awkwardly said. I've never had a surprise party before. In fact, I always asked my mom to ignore my birthday. Of course that was inevitable since I shared it with Mikasa. I didn't like the attention.
