Mikasa's POV:
I was sitting on the bed with my hands on my stomach, wondering if I were to have a boy or a girl. I was hoping for a girl but of course, Jean was hoping for a boy. I thought back to when I had seen Eren...
"You're going to be a great mom." Eren said, startling me.
"This is what Levi was talking about, oh my god."
"I just wanted to see how you were is all. Not here to scare you." He kept his distance. Probably because I was in the kitchen with a knife in my hand. I relaxed a bit and placed it down. "I thought I'd come see you one last time."
"What do you mean?"
"I've had a mission. I think I'm pretty close to fulfilling it. So when it's complete, there's no coming back."
"What mission?"
"You'll see soon enough." He shrugged.
The mission was Levi. Gabi walked in his room one morning with his tea and he had died in his sleep. But only I had known the truth the second I heard the news. I think everyone was more happy than sad. We all loved Levi, he became the grumpy uncle to us all. He was family. But it was no secret he was hurting. He did what he needed to do in this world. For everyone and for humanity.
"Mikasa, I just wanna say I'm sorry. I put you through hell and back the longest. From day one I had you worrying about me. You have no idea how happy it makes me that you're happy. You're living a life you always deserved. I'm glad that horse is able to provide for you in a way I couldn't." Of course he had to joke about my husband looking like a horse. I never thought he did. It was almost like it was an inside joke between Eren and Levi to call Jean a horse face. "He loves you a lot. Always has. That was part of the reason I hated him."
"Because he loved me?"
"Because I knew he would do a better job than me." He reached to hold my hand and I gasped from being able to feel his cold touch. "I'm glad you realized that too."
"We would have our moments but it wasn't until after you died."
"What made you realize?"
"Levi." His bright aura turned dark just by the name. It wasn't anger, it was sadness. "Levi was the one meant for you, not me."
Eren ran his fingers through his hair. "I hurt him so bad, Mikasa. It's almost as if he's forgotten everything I've done when I go and see him."
"He doesn't care, Eren. That's what made me realize. If you asked Levi to leave this world and be with you, he would say yes. If you asked me, I would say no. Because I appreciate what you did for us, I know you cared about everyone. So I want to live that life the way you wanted me to. I live in a wonderful home, a loving husband, we're having a baby. This is a paradise I didn't know I could have. It's thanks to you. I wouldn't give this life up for anything. Eren, I'll always love you. But when I kissed you that one last time, that was also my goodbye." He smiled again as he wiped the tears from my eyes.
"That's all I want." He wiped his own tears. "Is for you to be happy. I love you, Mikasa."
"I love you too, Eren."
He pulled me close into a tight hug and kissed the top of my head.
The definition of love was finally understood between us. We loved each other but it wasn't in the way Eren loves Levi. We're best friends. He's my life partner. A much more fitting term.
I just felt it was best for me not to tell Levi that we had talked about him. The only one that knew was Armin.
The bedroom door opened up to reveal Jean with a light smile on his face. He hung his hat on a hook and laid on the bed next to me, propping his elbow up to have his chin placed in his palm. He put his other hand on my stomach and started tracing figure 8's across it.
"How're you feeling?" He asked.
"Tired." I sigh.
"Do you need anything? I could get you some tea from the kitchen or-"
"I'm okay, Jean." I laugh. "Thank you."
I never expected Jean to be the loving, overprotective type during one's pregnancy but he's been full of surprises since we ever made it official.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, I'm sure." He stretched his body for his lips to reach my cheek and then down to my stomach.
"You looked like you were pretty deep in thought though, are you okay?"
"Just thinking about things. Levi...Eren...Levi and Eren." I started to play with his hair and he blushed at the touch. You'd think after all this time he wouldn't act like a giddy teenager. I've been mistaken on countless occasions.
"We both know Levi's right where he wants to be. Probably living whatever paradise Eren built for him somewhere." He was right. Wherever they were, they were both probably happier than ever.
"I'm also just thinking about my conversation with Eren."
"Which parts? You've always left out bits and pieces."
"Just about us."
"Really?" He seemed shocked.
"I just thanked him and said if it weren't for him, you and I wouldn't be living where we are now. We're together. We're happy. I'm happy."
His cheeks grew red again but he couldn't contain his smile.
"God, I love you."
"I love you too." He gave me a quick peck on the lips and then left the room to start making dinner.
Life is good.
