"You like your coffee black because..." Chan asked, dragging out the last word so that Felix would complete it but Felix only looked confused as he murmured, "I don't know. I can't remember"
Knowing exactly why Felix couldn't recall anything, Chan dropped the matter and asked something different. "Who is Jiwoo to you?" He had actually been thinking about it since he saw them talking in front of the school gate. When Jiwoo held Felix's hand, it took every bit of his rational sense to not storm over there and yank her hands off him.
Felix was relieved to have a change of topic. Although it wasn't one he wanted to talk about, it was still better than having his head ache. "You mean 'was'. Jiwoo means shit to me now. We were dating in our first year of college. I thought she was the one you know. I mean, she had everything I've always wanted in a partner and I was ready to be fully committed but I guess I wasn't enough for her because she cheated on me with some other guy from our class. I caught them redhanded"
Chan's heart ached. Not because Felix was cheated on but because Felix had been with someone else after him. Thinking about it made his blood boil. He fisted his hands underneath the table and tightened his jaw. "She didn't deserve you Felix" he said. "And you certainly don't need someone like her. She didn't value you. It's her loss"
'I didn't value you too then' Chan thought. 'I chose my father over you. Never again. This time, you're my first and only priority. I promise'
Felix had heard those words of comfort from many people but coming from Chan, it made him want to believe it was true. It made him want to believe that he was worth being loved by someone. For himself. For his true self. Not for his wealth. Gazing into Chan's smoldering dark eyes, Felix saw that they held extreme seriousness, compelling Felix to trust that Chan was right.
Chan's eyes were beautiful. Deep and soothing. Like dipping into a Jacuzzi on a cold dark night. They were warm and inviting and Felix felt like he could stare into them forever.
"I would have given her the world you know" he said, breaking eye contact. "I would have done everything she wanted. She was my first girlfriend and I thought what we had was real. It hurt when I found out that I meant nothing more than a money bag to her"
"Well she got what she deserves" Chan said. He stretched out his hand above the table and placed it on top of Felix's. Felix's hand was warm and it melted the thin ice of jealousy and anger coating his heart. "Anytime you think about her and you feel sad, remember where her greedy ass landed her. You don't need people like her in your life"
Felix couldn't help but laugh. "You're right. She's miserable now"
Chan smiled. "Exactly" Then he murmured to himself, "That's what happens to people who hurt you"
"Huh?" Felix asked, not getting what he said but Chan just shook his head. "Nothing. It's nothing"
The waitress arrived with their food and started arranging it on the table. Felix's cup of coffee was the last and when the waiter was about to place it in front of Felix, Felix suddenly felt as if he was put in some sort of trance.
The whole scene changed and he saw it in slow motion. The waitress's perfectly manicured hand changed into that of a man and instead of the cup going on the table, it tilted and the hot coffee poured all over his thighs.
Felix shrieked and jerked up the chair in fright, causing everyone in the restaurant to look at him but he didn't even notice. He was panting hard, looking down at his thighs. Then he heard the words, 'Your heart is already as black as your coffee'
"Felix!" Chan called as he stood up and held Felix by the arms. "Felix, are you okay?"
The touch broke Felix's trance like state and he blinked in confusion when he saw that his thighs weren't wet. The cup was sitting perfectly on the table, full of coffee and the waitress was staring at him like he was crazy.
"Felix" Chan called again and Felix gazed at him, not knowing what to say. "What happened?"
"I-I- I don't know..." he panted. "I thought...the coffee..."
"It's okay" Chan said, brushing his bangs away from his eyes. "It's okay. Sit down"
He made Felix sit then held a glass of water to his lips which he drank slowly. The water cooled his throat and cleared his head. "I'm fine" he said, pushing the glass away. "Thank you"
"Is this interesting?" Chan asked the waitress who was still standing there. "Are we shooting a movie?"
The waitress quickly scurried away and everyone else minded their own business.
Chan wanted to know what made Felix jump like that but he noticed Felix didn't want to talk about it so as much as he didn't want to, he changed the topic again. "You're a college student right? What's your major?" He started to eat, acting as if nothing happened, hoping to make Felix feel comfortable.
Felix was relieved. He felt that Chan was quite sensible and considerate. He really didn't want to talk about it for he had no idea what just happened himself. And he wasn't ready to think about it. He shook his head, trying to get his bearings right. "Yeah...I uh...Accounting. My major is Accounting. I'm good with numbers"
"Wow. That is quite surprising" Chan chuckled. "Considering the fact that you don't seem like the serious type"
"Yeah I've heard that a lot" Felix smiled. He appreciated the fact that Chan was trying to cheer him up. Chan made him feel at ease. As if he didn't have some kind of weird moment some seconds ago. It gave him the courage to eat too. "I like to have fun but I have to take over the family business in a few years so I can't afford to slack"
"But do you want to?" Chan asked. "Is that your dream? Finish college, take over the business and then what? Be bored for the rest of your life? Like me?"
"Well that sounds quite discouraging" Felix chuckled.
Hearing Felix laugh because of him made Chan feel like his heart was dipped in honey. Felix was even more beautiful when he laughed. His brown eyes would light up and his whole face will have this kind of glow that made people want to be closer to him. And that's exactly what Chan did. He shifted his chair and moved closer to Felix.
Felix didn't find it strange at all. "But it's worth it right? I mean you're very successful at a young age. There aren't many young billionaires out there"
