"I'm the one who sucks at receiving" he replied then walked to the bench and sat down. Chan followed instantly. "What are you saying? You don't suck at receiving. You don't suck at anything"
That made Felix chuckle. "I'm not playing well. I shouldn't have invited you to watch me lose. I've wasted your time" He took a bottle of water from a bag under the bench and downed half of it.
Chan groaned and placed his hands on Felix's shoulders, bending and staring straight into his eyes. "This is not a waste of time. Anything that involves you can never be a waste of time for me. You don't know how happy I am to see this side of you. You don't even know how amazing it feels to watch you"
Felix was stunned. He wasn't expecting that at all. He saw Chan as a basic domineering CEO who liked to bury himself in work and sleep late. He invited him with the mind that he might not make it. He was actually surprised to see Chan sitting with Hyunjin before the game.
Chan's hand went to Felix cheek, touching it tenderly. The skin was warm and smooth. "You don't suck Felix" he said. "They just have a good formation and your coach is too dumb to see it"
"You played volleyball?" Felix asked, once again surprised. Chan shook his head and lowered his hand. "No. I played basketball but I know a thing or two about volleyball"
Timeouts were quite short so the whistle was blown again, indicating all players to get back on the court.
"Felix!" the coach bellowed. "Get your ass back there!"
"He's not going. Send someone else" Chan ordered.
The coach wanted to refuse but he recalled how Chan choked him earlier so he reluctantly sent another person in.
Felix was confused. "Why can't I go? I'm fine. I can still play"
"No" Chan stated firmly. "You're going to sit here and listen to me. I'm going to tell you how to win"
********
As Felix played, he realised Chan was right. Their opponents had changed their tactics. They arranged themselves in such a way that whenever he was blocking, Yeo-sang wouldn't spike so he won't get blocked. And whenver Yeo-sang was serving, the rotation would make Felix be at the back, where he could serve as an easy target.
All the anger and the frustration he felt before vanished for he knew exactly what to do now. Thanks to Chan.
When it was Yeo-sang's turn to serve, as planned, Felix was at the back but this time, there was a change. He stood a bit farther than he used to. This way, Yeo-sang would have to use more force and more force equals a big mistake. He took a deep breath to calm his nerves and concentrated on the ball. All he had to do was cut off Yeo-sang's streaks. Once he does, the other team had no more advantages. They would crush them to dust.
For the first time in a long time, Felix felt excited going against Yeo-sang one on one again. He promised himself to give Chan a big kiss if the plan worked.
He set his eyes on the ball and blocked everything out, remembering only Chan's words.
'Yeo-sang's serves are fast and powerful so you can't receive it but that's the point. Don't try to receive it. Just dodge it. Once it lands outside your court without hitting any player, you guys get a point'
Chan had cupped his cheeks and gazed at him with full confidence. 'That ball is fast but I believe you can dodge it. You will win this game Felix'
He could still feel the warmth of those big palms on his cheeks. The roughness of his skin. He smiled. If they really win, he would surely give Chan that kiss.
The whistle was blown and the entire court went silent. Everyone knew that Felix was benched for some time and was later brought back. They wondered if he had any plans.
Felix watched Yeo-sang take a few steps back as usual then perform his signature jump serve. The serve that Felix had never caught. Not even once.
The ball went past the net with a whoosh, heading straight for Felix's chest. Everyone gasped but this time, Felix wasn't scared. He could see the ball.
Just when the ball was about to hit him, he bent backwards and the ball went straight past him and out the court.
The entire place erupted with deafeaning screams.
Felix's heart was beating faster than a jackhammer. He couldn't believe it. He couldn't believe he did it. He stopped Yeo-sang's streak. After three whole years!
The joy of the team knew no bounds. They tackled Felix in a group hug and some even cried, not believing their eyes but Felix had his eyes on one person only.
The person who made it possible.
Chan.
Chan stared back with a proud smile and mouthed, "I knew you could do it"
At the end, Felix's team won both sets.
Chan had said that their opponents were relying too much on Yeo-sang's serves to win and that was their downfall. They should have had more tactics.
Well, they won and Felix's fear of recieveing a ball was grinded to dust. Chan told him that games like volleyball, basketball and football all required strategies and each one evolves. You just have to study your opponets, find out their flaws and use it to your advantage.
"You bastard!" Yeo-sang shouted, pinning Felix to a locker by holding down both his shoulders. Felix wasn't afraid nor did he struggle. His body was already sore due to the game and he didn't want to make it worse. Besides, due to past experiences, he knew not to struggle against Yeo-sang. The guy would just get more agitated and more determined to conquer. Better to play safe and let the idiot vent his anger. Felix knew Yeo-sang will never hit him anyway.
Yeo-sang was taller and stronger than Felix. With golden blonde hair and cold dark eyes. He came from a long line of soldiers and his father was currently a General. He grew up in the army barracks but refused to join the army when he came of age. Instead, he ran off to high school and joined a volleyball team. Yeo-sang had never lost a match in his life till he met Felix.
