Today, Miss Park assigned the students in her kindergarten class to draw self portraits. One table was full with eight students, drawing away and chatting happily about little matters like the latest episode of Teletubbies, their dogs and other pets at home, sometimes their older siblings.
At another table sat a smaller number of kids, probably about five of them. They were a bit quieter, other than a kid with eyes shining with excitement and straight long brown hair who was talking to herself as she drew.
"Brown crayon? Brown crayon? BROWN CRAYON!"
She grabs it and scribbles her hair onto the circular shape of her head, grinning to herself as she talks and sometimes sings random parts of a song her mother showed her. As the little girl drew, the other kids at the table quietly observed her. The girl didn't notice and kept drawing, occasionally grabbing another crayon for her shirt and eyes and mouth.
At another table, a kid with shoulder length wavy black hair sat by herself, doodling away quietly. While Miss Park had attempted to have her sit at the table with only five kids, the girl was stubborn and insisted on sitting by herself.
She didn't want to sit or talk with the other kids. She was comfortable and content with this, not sitting with the other kids means she doesn't have to share the crayons, and she doesn't have to bear them calling her "lonely girl". As she doodled her self portrait, Miss Park came by to check on her.
"Oh my, your portrait looks very nice Tzuyu!" The teacher remarked cheerily as she knelt down to Tzuyu's height in the chair. Tzuyu only made a "mhm" sound as she kept doodling. Miss Park smiled and watched the girl draw.
Tzuyu didn't seem to like this and glared at Miss Park, making the teacher laugh a little, "Sorry Tzuyu, I'll let you draw now."
Tzuyu watched her teacher leave, then went back to her drawing. It wasn't that she didn't like her teacher, but she didn't like eyes on her when she was doing something.
At the crowded table, some kids turned in their chairs to peer at her, one asking Miss Park why the "lonely girl" wouldn't sit with them. Miss Park only tells them to keep drawing and that the table doesn't have enough room.
They seem to laugh a little before the teacher frowns at them, making them quickly return to scribbling their portrait as Miss Park goes back to her desk and looks through her planning book.
Tzuyu could hear them, but she ignored it and just kept drawing. It did bother her a little though, why do they have to say she needs to sit with them? She can just draw by herself, and sharing crayons is annoying. Why share when you can have it all to yourself?
As she draws a shirt on her portrait in blue, she overhears some of the chatter from the table with the brown-eyed girl.
"Look guys! I'm done!" She was excitedly showing the other kids at the table her self portrait with a proud grin. Tzuyu thought it looked a little funny and that hers was much better. Tzuyu had a blue shirt on hers and that's the coolest colour! The other girl's portrait had a purple shirt which is only half cool.
"Miss Park is gonna think it's so cool!" She was speaking to the other kids, though it looked more like she was talking to herself since they were all quiet, some going back to their portraits.
Except for one kid, Nayeon. She hadn't spoken much earlier as she was busy hogging the crayons, but now she was grinning at the girl's portrait as well.
"Yeah! Sana, it looks cool! But I can make it better," The girl quips.
The other kids look at them curiously. Sana looks a little confused, but still smiles, "Really?!"
