Fifth graders have cooties. This was a statement that was ingrained into Sana's skull at the ripe age of 10. It didn't matter how much she liked someone as a friend — dating was out of the question at that point in her life.

Sana was quite outgoing even during her childhood, so it was no surprise she made friends easily. She was constantly surrounded by others. There were those who swarmed her for her personality, her talents, and some even for her looks. She paid no mind to why people liked her, she just knew they did.

When Sana met Tzuyu, her first impression of the other girl was that she was the quiet nerdy type. Tzuyu was scrawny, lanky, and mumbled through most of her sentences to hide her teeth covered in bright colored braces. She had glasses with frames far too large for her small face. She never dressed with the trends other kids tried to keep up with, so she was usually made fun of for having hand-me-downs. Others would often poke fun at her dimple that stood out so prominently on her cheek. But one thing was for sure, she was damn good at all her schoolwork.

When the two got paired up together for a science project, initially Sana was worried about working with someone with Tzuyu's demeanor. Some of the other kids would go out of their way to tease Tzuyu for her awkwardness, and the quiet girl never stood up for herself. It made Sana think she might start to be associated with the girl, but by the end of the project she realised Tzuyu was funny and sweet underneath all the shyness. The girl would draw little doodles for her and share her snacks when the teacher wasn't looking. Sana was glad to have made another friend.

The only time they ever needed to sit next to each other was when they were working on their project, but even once it ended Tzuyu would still drop off little notes and gifts whenever Sana wasn't surrounded by her friends. Sometimes they'd even have a chance to chat about whatever they'd seen on TV the night before if they were both the first ones in the classroom. They both liked some of the same cartoons and games, but Sana would never admit that to her other classmates. Tzuyu would skitter away once the other students would start to trickle in, but Sana was glad the girl still made an effort to communicate with her.

That sentiment came crashing to a halt when one day during the morning assembly for daily announcements, while everyone was lined up alphabetically, Jeon Jungkook tapped her shoulder from his position behind her. She mainly knew the boy as Tzuyu's best friend — another slightly-shunned individual due to his overtly hyper nature and the geeky hobbies he shared with Tzuyu. The pair had been ridiculed by some of their classmates for playing with Yu-Gi-Oh cards during their lunch break and no one let them forget about it.

"Tzuyu wants you to know that she likes you," he boldly claimed, a cocky smile on his face. The statement kept Sana rooted in place, feeling heat creep into her face. She prayed Jungkook was merely playing some sort of prank, but a sideways glance at Tzuyu standing in the other line with a hopeful face had her gritting her teeth in annoyance.

"Ooooh, Tzuyu has a crush on you!" another boy teased. Sana's brows furrowed as she thought of a way to escape the situation.

"Ew," she hissed. Jungkook's smile faltered and he shot her a questioning glance. "I'm not joking, you know," he said, but he only cowered more despite his taller stature as Sana puffed her chest out.

"I know, and I don't care. I don't like her. Ew," she repeated.

Sana refused to look over at Tzuyu's crestfallen face. The girl was staring down at her shoes while the kids around them started laughing and teasing.

"As if Sana would ever like a loser like Tzuyu," one girl spoke out, and Sana had to bite back her immediate reaction of wanting to defend Tzuyu. Of course Jungkook wouldn't let his friend get stepped all over without a fight, but before a real argument could break out the assembly came to and end and the students were all shuffled back to their respective classrooms.
