Todrick was now setting food on the table for the rest of the pack, he and Kevin finally having finished making lunch.
Jake and Alex were already at the table, Jake telling Alex a story of some kind that had Alex laughing hard enough to cry.
Todrick walked around them to set something else on the table, and ruffled up Alex's hair as he walked by to go back to the kitchen.
Alex quickly turned and leaned out of his chair a little to grab Todrick's wrist.
Todrick flipped back around. "Yes, Allie?"
"Hi!"
"Hi, honey."
Alex giggled and turned back to Jake. "You should tell Toddy the story too!"
Jake nodded, leaning forward to begin the story again.
Todrick smiled at them, only partially listening, because all he could think about was how cute Alex was, by trying to involve him in whatever Alex and Jake were doing.
Scott carried Mitch on his back as they walked down the stairs, heading straight for the dining room table.
Kevin hummed at them when they walked by the kitchen. "How's your shoulder doing, Alpha?"
"Good, thanks."
"Are you sure?"
Scott went past the dining room table, and instead looped back around to go inside the kitchen instead.
He met Kevin's eyes, and bounced Mitch on his back once to prove that he was fine. "Doesn't this look fine?"
Mitch giggled and held onto him a little tighter.
Kevin just raised an eyebrow, still plating a dish for Todrick to put on the table. "If you say so."
"Want me to prove it to you?"
"Am I allowed to look at your shoulder?" Kevin countered.
Scott gently set Mitch down onto the ground, before reaching behind his neck to tug his shirt over his head.
Mitch grabbed the shirt from him, folding it and holding it in his arms.
Kevin set the plate down, and took a step forward to poke and prod at Scott's shoulder.
Scott just watched him, occasionally glancing at Mitch, who was watching Kevin in fascination.
Kevin lifted his arm, smoothed out the skin, poked at the bruises, moved his arm at awkward angles, but the entire time, Scott didn't say a word. Finally Kevin stepped back, satisfied.
"See? I'm fine."
"Thank goodness. You've been hurt for so long."
Scott laughed a little, taking his shirt back from Mitch. "I know."
Kevin handed Scott a plate of vegetables when he had his shirt back on, and although Scott made a face at the dish, he carried it out into the dining room anyway.
Avi was sitting on the couch, half asleep on Kirstie's shoulder as she sat beside him.
Avi suddenly hummed lowly.
Kirstie slid one arm between the back of the couch and Avi, to hug him sideways. "Alpha?"
"Hmm?"
"Is everything okay? Sounded like you were going to say something."
"I wanted to ask you about Kevin's speech."
"What about it?"
"Why'd you stand up with the other Omegas? I've never... Done something like that to you, have I?"
Kirstie kissed his temple in an attempt to be reassuring. "No, of course you haven't, Sir. It's just a few things your father said to me when he was here. I spoke to Kevin about it when it happened, and it's fine... But... It happened."
Avi sat up, forcing his eyes to open. "What? Why didn't you tell me? What did he say to you?"
"It's not important. I just... Didn't want to make your guys' relationship even worse. No one should be in that much conflict with their parents."
"No, Kirstin. You need to tell me that kind of stuff immediately. Shame on you for keeping it from me."
She frowned, upset for disappointing him. "I'm sorry, Alpha. I know that I shouldn't have kept it from you. But I guess I just held onto it for so long that I forgot."
Avi's eyebrows came together for a second. "I can't believe you didn't tell me. Do you not trust me?"
"Of course I trust you. I really just forgot, I promise."
Avi squinted at her. "You know what? Why don't you go eat lunch with the others?"
Kirstie pouted. "You're trying to push me away. Kevin said you were going to do that."
Avi's scowl only deepened. "Oh really? Well maybe you should go see if Kevin has anything else to say. Since he's the only one you talk to nowadays."
"Alpha, please. You know I didn't mean that. I just didn't know what to do."
"I'm upset with you. Just do as I say."
"But, Alpha--"
"Kirstin Taylor, don't you dare argue with me. Just go."
She stood up slowly, frowning at him. "I'm sorry, Sir. I never meant to disappoint you. I am so, so sorry."
*********
Kirstie was now sitting at the table with a frown, not eating her lunch because of the guilt that was consuming her.
Kevin and Todrick were wrapped up in each other, or they would've been the ones to say something.
But of course, Scott didn't miss it. He sat down between Mitch and Kirstie, holding Mitch's hand on top of the table while Mitch ate.
He leaned over a little, taking a fork to get some lettuce for Kirstie to eat.
Kirstie shook her head when he brought the fork to her lips, and looked over to meet his eyes with her own.
Scott frowned at her. "Come on, Kit... Please? For me?"
She sighed, but did as he said and took some salad off of the fork to chew.
Scott set the fork down, just to reach over and give her shoulder a reassuring squeeze. "Thank you."
Kirstie nodded, picking the utensil back up to continue eating.
Scott glanced around the rest of the table, seeing everyone else involved in their own conversations, including Mitch and Alex, so he turned back to Kirstie and spoke quietly. "Are you okay, Kit?"
"Yeah... Alpha yelled at me."
"He, what? Why?"
"I kept a secret from him."
Scott gave her a sympathetic look. "Oh... I see. He shouldn't have yelled at you."
"Well... He didn't really yell. But he was really upset. Especially since... Y'know. His mom..."
"I know. He isn't mad at you, Kirst. I hope you know that. He's just being distant because he doesn't want anyone to get involved. He's pushing you away so you won't feel bad for him." Scott explained, taking a bite of his own food afterwards.
Kirstie smiled a little, staring at her salad. "I know... I wish he wouldn't do that though."
"I know you do, honey. But he loves you very very much. That's why he pushes you away. To protect you."
