Adam texted me that his plane had just landed and he was getting a cab.
Suddenly, I was dead nervous. I had no makeup on, my clothes were a mess, and my hair probably looked terrifying. I managed a lightening quick shower and used the tiny hairdryer provided, did my makeup as fast as I could while still doing it correctly, and slipped into baby blue jeans and a simple white, long sleeved boat neck shirt. Good enough.
Before I knew it, there was a knock on the door and I squeaked.
"Oh my gosh, okay just take a deep breath." I whispered to myself. After one last look in the mirror, I opened the door to reveal Adam.
Oh. My. God.
Snow had melted in his spiky black hair and his lashes were damp; snowflakes were fading on his long black pea-coat. He looked stunning and almost... simple. No makeup, a huge gray scarf tossed over one shoulder, and leather gloves with a small trail of rhinestones along the thumbs really set the outfit.
And his arms were laden with several small boxes.
"Adam!" I gasped and let him enter the room.
He grinned and gently set the presents on the tiny couch then turned to give me a hug.
"Merry Christmas!"
I hugged him back, blushing. "Thanks, you too,"
Adam slipped out of his jacket, scarf, gloves, and boots and I put everything away in the closet, desperately hoping that we wouldn't run out of things to say.
"You know, you really didn't have to do this," I said, turning to face him and leaning up against the closet door. Adam's grin was enough to melt the snow beyond the window and I felt a warm tingle down my spine and my own smile light my face.
"Phoenix, please. Nothing makes me happier."
"But you haven't gotten a chance to see your family much lately. I feel bad for tearing you away from them."
"No, please don't worry about it. I was sick of all the attention being put on me and relatives I don't like or barely know."
My heart gave a tug and my smile slipped.
"What is it?"
"It's just that..I've never had a Christmas without my family before. It's weird."
Adam took me in his arms and I inhaled his scent, musky, clean, and with a hint of...danger. Rebellion. I smirked at the thought, but when he hugged me tighter and rested his cheek on my head I burst into tears.
Here he was; the man I'd just ditched my family for. With absolutely no chance at a romantic relationship with, but I'd chosen him over them.
Because even though we'd only know each other for a couple months Adam was fast becoming my best friend. But was it too early to say that?
"Shh, Nix, what's wrong?" He asked quietly. "Are my hugs really that charming?"
I let out a watery chuckle but made no indication of pulling away; it was the last thing I wanted to do. Hugs always made me emotional, but this was ten times worse in this moment. That, and when I pulled back he would see my totally ugly crier face.
"Listen, you don't have to tell me all of it if you don't want to, I just thought that maybe it would help. I'm not good at this kind of thing, I'll tell you that now."
"Can I just hug you?"
"Aww," he rubbed my back. "Of course, on one condition."
"Okay," I sniffed.
