Joel closed a book titled 'Beginner's Guide to Learning the Basics on Magic'.
Two days had passed in a flash and everyone was still trying to settle in.
However, for a few noticeable people like Lucas and Joel himself, it seemed easy to adapt to everyday life like this, thought the extremely unfortunate loss of wifi coupled with the fact that their phones were fried to a tee brought morale down for many, especially the more sociable people who used social media.
Due to Gracie's extremely blunt wake up call and explaining, the group managed to grasp their situation.
Joel stared at his hands and held it in front of him,"[Fireball]," He chanted, a basic tier one fire spell.
A small flame, roughly the size of a fist materialised before him, though his hand wasn't affected in anyway shape or form by the heat.
"Can I really kill someone with this?..." Joel mumbled to himself.
"Will I stoop to a level of killing for the sake of survival?" Joel asked, posing a rhetorical question to himself.
It was a stupid question, in human society where laws are put in place to preemptively stop killings of fellow humans.
But take out that law of preventing killings and change it to a setting where power is king, you have a whole different story and a new set of variables one has to take into consideration.
'Of course I wouldn't' would be an answer people would normally answer when asked that question but, what if you had to kill to survive?
Undoing the spell, Joel exited his room and headed for the dining hall.
Upon reaching, he saw one of his close friends, Ryan.
"Yo. You holding up okay?" Joel asked.
"Yeah. I'm fine...I think. I just...it's all so crazy to me...Like one moment we're in a boring class and the next we're teleported to some insane medieval setting death war where we have to kill one another..."
"Well if you think of it like that..."
"Like what Joel? How else would you interpret this horrible situation we're in because of some stupid king's desperation like that girl said?" Ryan asked frustratedly.
"Well...There's always two sides to a story, it's just dependant on how you view it. You could think we'd all die in this miserable world, all alone, far away from wherever the hell our family and friends are...Or you could think about the bright side...Think Ryan. There is MAGIC in this world. World-breaking power that could make a person invincible. Then, there's all the fantasy races we've dreamed of since young. Elves, beastmen, zombies, liches, dragons, vampires you name it. Don't you think this is a time where we can meet these species. And if, we somehow manage to go home, won't this be like a grand final adventure with all our friends?"
"I guess...?"
"Think Ryan, we have knowledge from another world. Stuff the likes of which this world has never seen before. We could revolutionise this world. Rule it, destroy it at our whims through technology." Joel said, an excited look in his eyes.
"You're right. We have an upper hand in this world. Yes! You're a genius Joel!" Ryan exclaimed.
"No worries Ryan, we're in this together. We're all friends, comrades with similar hopes of returning home someday. We'll make it through this period. Tough it out."
At this point, most of the group had arrived.
Madeline sat down quietly with the rest of the girls, Cheryl, May, Angeline and Charmaine whilst the guys, Lucas, Will, Garry, Alex, Jason joined Joel and Ryan.
Most of the group were in low spirits but the class clown and the loudest of the bunch, Lucas cheered them up with a heartfelt speech.
"Guys and gals! Listen up! I know you're all not very optimistic about our future but we have to stay together! One for all, all for one! If we fall, we fall together! We'll work together to combat this problem! We'll become stronger than before, we'll be comrades in arms! Though I cannot be certain about the future, I will do my best to make sure everyone stays safe no matter how much a price i'll pay!" Lucas shouted, a determined expression on his face as he punched his hand out.
"YEAHHHH!" The guys shouted and cheered while the girls clapped, putting on smiley faces.
Though it was a generic cheer-up talk, the fact of the matter was, someone was willing to become the cornerstone of the group, boosting morale now that they had someone to look up to as a competent leader.
Then, from the back, three figures appeared.
Gracie, Arceus and Matthew, a platoon leader under the king Elliot's command.
"Right on! That's the spirit you'll need for training today!" Matthew shouted, pumping his fist.
Matthew then bowed,"Sorry, I get excited when meeting new allies...Ah! Our names. My name is Matthew Eric, a trusted aide of the king. This young man here his his highness' son, Arceus Elliot and that young lady to his right would be Gracie Valencia, an elite of our kingdom. It would not be short of the truth to call her one of, if not the most outstanding individual in the younger generation."
Matthew was in light armour, like Arceus whilst Gracie wore a plain cotton short-sleeved shirt with brown pants, seemingly without armour.
Lucas walked forward,"Everyone! Let's work together and become stronger as a team okay?"
"Yes!"
The group walked to the forest like mini regiment, with Arceus, Matthew and Lucas in the front.
Gracie was stationed at to guard the group from any potential dangers.
Joel walked at the back with Ryan, chatting away.
Upon reaching their destination, Matthew had handed out iron swords to them.
"Shall we begin our training? Today, we will be fighting wolfs! One of easiest targets for new adventurers! If you manage to kill enough of 'em, you would be able get yourself a nice change of clothes! You'll be going in pairs!"
"C'mon guys! Let's go!" Lucas shouted.
Joel paired with Ryan and they headed off in a separate direction.
Gracie was using wind related tracking magic to keep track of the group, so as to make sure none of them died.
The duo quickly came across a wolf and with their extremely basic knowledge of magic, they fought.
"[Fireball]!" Joel shouted, a ball of flames appeared and he flung it at the wolf, pushing it back, but not hurting it.
The wold pounced towards Joel in rage as it attempted to claw at him.
Ryan appeared from the back, slashing down on the wolf,"I got you!"
The wolf backed away, growling in anger at the two of them.
"I'll distract him with a fireball. You go for his head from the side."
"Got it."
A simple and crude strategy, nonetheless, it worked.
"[Fireball!" Joel shouted, flinging yet another fireball at the wolf.
Ryan jumped from the side, stabbing the sword a few inches into the wolf's skull, fracturing it, and ultimately, killing the wolf.
"Alright! We got one!" Joel shouted in merriment, staring at the dead wolf.
"Do we bring it with us?..." Ryan asked.
"No. We keep the ear. Apparently the ears of a wolf are the most valuable. The skin's pretty good but it's way too heavy and the meat of a 'demonic beast' isn't very tasty per say." Joel said, this knowledge was obtained from his past two days of learning the do's and don'ts in this world.
"Right."
And so, they went on their way to find their next prey.
