On the very next day, Gracie could be seen walking around Elvehiem, more specifically, the capital.
It was quite an interesting sight, much different from the food sold at back home and very much so from Oceania Reefs.
With a small bag of these treats made from sweet rice flour dipped in a honey-like substance, it was an affordable delicacy.
Then, Gracie came upon a big shop which surprised even her.
The words "Bondservant Post"
Feeling quite curious about what could possibly be within as she didn't quite know what the term meant, Gracie walked in.
An elven man, mid-forties wearing a peculiar suit and monocle came up to Gracie,"Ah! A fine lady I see, what can I do for you today? Are you looking for a bondservant for your attendant? Worry not, this is the best place in town!"
Gracie tilted her head,"I'm sorry...I'm not quite familiar with the term...I'm new around here..."
The man laughed and clapped his hands as several submissive men and women brought out several other women dressed scantily in rags.
"This, is a bondservant dear miss, a person, usually an elf who has lost the rights to themselves!" The man said proudly.
"What?..."
"Simply put, these people either spent one too many coins at the casino den and can't pay it back or have committed offences far to horrible! As for those people, they're given a choice! Be forced under a spell and to act as a bondservant, or be executed!" The man proclaimed.
Gracie finally understood.
Basically, these people were slaves, bondservant being a fancy name for a slavery shop.
Staring at the people ranging from young as nine to as old as fifty with two main races, elven and human, Gracie felt a bit of pity towards them, having lost all their basic rights.
The noble elves being forced to become slaves for even human travellers, truly a heart wrenching sight.
They begged her to buy them, promising that they would fulfil every desire no matter what, promising her they would do anything so long as she bought them.
Then, out of the corner of her eye, she spotted a girl, a year other two younger than her, sitting quietly at the corner, her messy black hair hung freely, her eyes dark, devoid of any emotion, as if she had prepared to leave this world and never come back again.
"How did she get here?..." Gracie asked the man.
The man laughed,"Oh? That elf girl? She was given up by her own father for money! A shame, really, she'd have made a great beauty had she grown up better. Ah, it's a hard life these days for the poorer side of society! You just have to go with the flow and hope you don't get caught dead last eh?"
Gracie felt a spark of sympathy for the girl.
She understood how it was like to have a family figure missing when you needed them most, after all, in her past life, it was just Gracie and her mother against the world.
Her father had left the moment her mother had been found pregnant with Gracie.
"What's her name?..." Gracie asked the shop owner.
"Oh? Is young miss interested in her? Well her name's Anna Fredrick. Anna for short. Sixteen this year." The shopkeeper finished his basic introduction,"She's a real beauty and cheap too! I'll give ya a discount. How bout it?"
