A/N: I'm obsessed with this song. Happy New Year!

Chris had this unbearable pain in his heart. One he had never experienced before but has heard about. For years, he tried so hard to prevent heartbreak. He managed to not get too close to anyone and if he did, he ended things before things would get too deep. But, with Y/N, he was completely caught off guard. He did everything he always did. He kept his distance but was close enough to want to see her. He only saw her at night and made sure she would only see him.
Looking into her broken, tear filled eyes, he hated himself. He hated that he caused her so much pain without knowing it. He hated that he's the reason her eyes weren't bright anymore, they didn't sparkle like they used to every time her eyes were on him. So mesmerized and consumed by everything he did. So in love with him.
As she got up and walked to the front door, Chris' heart was shattering into a million pieces. The one thing that brought him to life, that made him what to be the best version of himself, the one that eased his anxiety, his safe haven was walking out of his life for good.
Unfortunately, he had no idea what went wrong. He wasn't expecting this to happen. If anything, he always thought he would be the one to break up with Y/N before he was too deep, but he already was and he wasn't planning on running away from her like he had done with the women in his past.
"Before you go," his voice cracked, "was there something I could've said to make your heart beat better?" He stood up from the couch and slowly walked towards her. He stood behind her, wanting to turn her around and wrap his arms around her tight, refusing to let her go. "If only I'd have known you had a storm to weather-"
"If only I'd have known," she repeated his words before she scoffed in disbelief. She turned on her heel and faced him. "Chris, we have been fucking around for two years. Two. Whole. Years." She stressed with more tears in her eyes. She shook her head as she tried her best to continue, "you never took me out on a date. You kept me hidden in your bedroom. I haven't met your family or at least one of your friends. Not one. As much as I wanted to introduce you to my family, I'm glad I didn't. How would I have explained to them about you? Uh?"
Chris stayed quiet. Completely taken back by this new information. He swallowed hard. "I thought you wanted the same thing as I did. I thought we were both on the same page about this. About us."
"At first, yeah, I did." Tears finally fell down her cheeks. "But eventually I caught feelings. I wanted more. I wanted to be with you. But, you still don't, Chris. You only want to hide me. Keep me as your dirty, little secret. That's the problem. So, I have to go. Goodbye, Chris," she opened the door and walked away without looking back at his house.
He turned around and saw the coffee table. He walked towards it and opened the small drawer, revealing his surprise gift for Y/N. Tonight was the night he was going to ask her to be his girlfriend and surprise her with these gifts: a silver heart necklace and a vacation itinerary. He had booked flights to her hometown and then to his, where they would both meet each other's families.
Chris' tighten his hand into a tight fist, his knuckles turning white. He grabbed the vase on top of the coffee table and flung it at the wall. He saw the glass shatter into pieces, much like his heart. He hated her. He wanted to hate her so much, but he was just kidding himself. He loved her more than anything in the world.
Chris fell to the floor as tears rushed down his cheeks. He closed his eyes wondering if there was something he could've said to make it all stop hurting for the both of you. He tried his best to replace every moment he had with Y/N - staying up all night talking about everything, loving every inch of her body - but he couldn't. All he could hear were the words he needed to say. And now, it was too late.
