"Andy, this is Y/N, my step-daughter."
Andy dropped his fork, spilling lasagna on his lap.
"Y/N, this is my boyfriend, Andy."
"Fuck me," Y/N groaned.
Andy stood up from his chair and walked towards her. He extended his hand and whispered low enough for only her. "I already did and I'll gladly do it again."
Y/N let out a small squeak at Andy's bold statement.
"It's nice to meet you," Andy said as he shook her hand.
"What the hell is the matter with you, Y/N?" Rhonda asked. "Don't you have any manners?"
"Uh, I'm sorry," she apologized. She looked back at Andy and she could see the glint in his blue eyes. "Um, it's nice to meet you too."
"Rhonda, you didn't tell me you had another daughter," Andy said as he made his way back to the table. "How come I didn't meet her the other night at dinner when I met your children?"
"She's my stepdaughter. She's not biologically mine, which is why I didn't invite her to dinner that night." Rhonda cleared her throat. "I was under the impression she wasn't gonna be home tonight. Otherwise, I would have suggested going out to dinner somewhere or maybe eat back at your place."
Y/N's heart sank at Rhonda's words.
Her mother died giving birth to her. And like Cinderella's story, her father got remarried to Rhonda a few years later. At 8 years old, Y/N was excited to have a motherly figure in her life and two new step-siblings. The first few years, their life as a family was picture perfect. They took at least three vacation trips a year, coordinated Halloween costumes together, went to the park every Saturday morning, then got ice cream afterwards. They sat together as a family every evening for dinner and talked about their day.
Until, Y/N's father died in a fatal car accident shortly after she turned 11. She had no other family but Rhonda. Y/N thought she'd be there for her, but she was wrong. Everything went downhill from there. Rhonda wouldn't pay attention to her as much as she did with her own children. If anything, she made it very clear Y/N wasn't her responsibility because she wasn't her real daughter.
"That's alright," Andy's voice pulled Y/N out of her head. "Would you like to join us? We got plenty."
"She can't. Can't you see she picked up dinner for herself? Which by the way, is rude, Y/N. You didn't even bother to call and ask me if I wanted any Chinese food," Rhonda said.
Y/N cleared her throat. "I'm sorry. I barely had enough for one combo."
"What's the point of you having a job if you don't even bother to know how to manage your money?" Rhonda asked.
Y/N felt small and was totally embarrassed that Rhonda was doing this in front of Andy.
"Hey, Rhonda, that's a little out of line, don't you think?" Andy asked.
"Excuse me," Y/N turned around and bolted for the down stairs that lead to the basement that was her bedroom. She slammed the door behind her with her foot and leaned against it. Her eyes began to well up. She immediately closed her eyes and whispered to herself. "Don't cry. She's not worth the tears."
