Chapter 104

P.O.V/ Kim Stevens:

One Month later...

It's been a month since I found out I was having a girl. Kyle and I are so excited to meet our baby girl. Speaking of her, Carly is very healthy and more active in the womb. It's mostly her stretching or twisting; I can still feel the gentle flutters, which is her moving. I'm now five months pregnant, which is 17 weeks. Today is Monday, September 4, 1995; It's Terri's 40th birthday. She is getting off work at 3:00 pm, and we're all going to her house for her party. Kat has an appointment with Dr. Steinburg for her baby. She called me yesterday and asked if I would go with her cause she didn't want to go alone. James can't go because he has to work today so I agreed. I'm leaving work at 1:00 pm. Kat's appointment is at 2:00 pm. Brianna and her gang haven't messed with Jesse or Brandon in a month, but they could be up to something. Who knows, with Kelly hanging around them. It's noon, and I'm at the café with K.J. and Dakota. We are talking and waiting for a waiter. Dakota said, " How far along is Kat?" I said, " She's two months, so 5 weeks". K.J. said, " That sucks. Her husband couldn't go to her appointment with her today". I said, " He had to work. His boss is an asshole. James is looking for somewhere else to work". Dakota said, " He's still the head of maintenance at that apartment complex we lived in?" I said, " Yeah, he's looking at this one company that only works for Residential homes". Dakota said, " Cool.. cause the next time the air starts acting up in my house, I'll give him a call". I said, " Something was up ours back in June.. Kyle called someone quickly cause having a hot and cranky pregnant woman is not fun". I can't help but smile as they both giggle at me. Dakota said as she giggled. " You bit his head off a few times, didn't you?" I said as I giggled. " A little.. I apologized after I did, though,". Dakota said with a smile. " You're already a little cranky anyway." I give her a playful glare as K.J. giggles. She said, " Well, from what you've both said.. Kim has a bad temper". I said as I giggled, " I'm not as bad as I used to be." Dakota said as she giggled, " I don't know.. we're in the mall with you and Kyle Saturday, and a woman in the food court kept checking him out.. I thought you were about to come across that table on her". We were giggling; I said, " She was staring hard.. and looking him up and down.. she couldn't keep her eyes off of him.. I don't usually do that, but it annoyed me". Dakota said, " Then you gave that woman a demon stare, and she got up and left quickly". They were giggling; I said, " Well, she was looking at my merchandise; I had to give her a stare." Dakota giggled. " Wait, she was looking at his junk?" I said, " Yes.. and that is mine". We bust out giggling; Dakota said, " I remember when we were in high school, and you were still dating Kelly.. some dude at the park kept staring at her boobs, and you chased him". I said, " That was those two annoying guys named Brody and Dominic. Remember them?" Dakota thought for a couple of seconds, then said, " Are those the two Kelly, Kyle, and Jason duct taped to the toilets in the rec room bathroom?" We're giggling and said, " Yeah.. I only chased him because he ran up and grabbed Kelly's ass". Dakota is giggling; she said, " Oh, I remember now.. you took off after Brody, and he screamed like a girl". K.J. said, " Did you catch him?" I said, " Yeah, he ran up to the swing set and started throwing the swings at me. I jumped over the first one, and he tripped and fell into the middle one, so I tangled him up in the middle one and the third one.. so I left him hanging". K.J. giggles and said, " I wish I could have hung out with you guys then you were nuts." I said " Yeah we're a little crazy back then." The waitress comes up with a small pad of paper and said " What can I get you?" Dakota said " I'll have a slice of pepperoni pizza, a bag of Pizzeria chips and a can of Mountain Dew." K.J. said " I'll have the turkey sub, a small can of Pringles and a can of Dr. Pepper." I said " I'll have the Chicken Salad and a can of Wild Cherry Pepsi." She writes it down and walks across the courtyard. I spot Kelly at a table; she's looking at some papers with her laptop open. She picks up a can of Dr. Pepper and takes a drink. Dakota said, " I haven't seen you eat pizza at all since you've been pregnant.. does it give you heartburn?" She said with a giggle. I looked at her and said, " Yes, bad.. I would love to eat it, but it hates me right now,". K.J. said, " I've heard the heartburn is bad sometimes." I said, " It can be. I've never been able to drink Mountain Dew for that reason, even when I wasn't pregnant". Dakota said, " Yeah if I drink too much, it gives me heartburn." I said, " Are you guys coming over to Terri's for the party?" Dakota smiled " We wouldn't miss it." I smile at her, Dakota said " It's hard to believe Terri is now forty." K.J. said " Yeah she looks great." Dakota grins at K.J., She smiles. I said " Jesse has said when Terri comes over to the high school to pick her up that the teenage boys are always checking her out some even drool." They giggle, Dakota said " That's gonna be you when you go and pick up Carly from high school.. those teenage boys are gonna drool over you too". I giggle and said " They already do... some of Brandon's friends still check me out and I'm pregnant". The waitress brought out our food, and we ate and continued to talk. Afterward, we paid for our lunches and walked back down to the office. I turned off my computer and gathered my things for the day. I put my shoulder bag on and walked to Nancy's office. She looks up from the computer screen. I said, " I'm leaving.. I have to take a friend to a doctor's appointment soon". Nancy smiled " Okay, see you tomorrow.. bye, Kim". I smiled. " Bye, Nancy." I walked down the stairs and out the doors to my car in the side parking lot. I drove home and changed clothes. I'm wearing a black t-shirt that says Journey World Tour 1981, a black leather Suede belt that is loose and can't be tight, a pair of low-rise Guess blue jeans, and a pair of blue, black, and white Nike Air Max Bw's. I drove over to Kat's house on Freemason. She lives down the hill from Sharp's Ridge. I picked Kat up and drove over to the hospital. After paying the man in the booth, I pulled into the parking garage and found a spot on the first floor. I parked the car in a spot and shut it off. We got out, closed the doors, and walked across to the doors leading to the emergency room elevators. We walked in, and Terri came around the right corner and led in front of the elevators. I said, " Happy Birthday". Kat smiles. " Happy Birthday, Terri". She smiles at us, hugs me, and then hugs Kat. She said to us " Thank you". I said, " We'll see you later." She smiled at us and then walked to the emergency room lobby. Kat pushed the button, and we waited for the elevator. It came down, and we got inside, going up to the fourth floor. Kat signed in, and we waited for a few minutes, and Dr. Steinburg called us back there. At 2:45 pm, we are walking to the elevators. Kat has her ultrasound in her hand. I push the button as she looks at it. She looked at me and said, " The baby is healthy." I smiled at her, and the elevator dings and opened. We walk in, and I push the button on the ground floor. The doors closed, and I asked Kat, " What are you hoping it is?" Kat smiled. " Either one boy or a girl". I put my hand on my stomach. It's more obvious now and more of a bump cause I'm short and have a short torso. I said, " I have an appointment for Carly on the 11th". Kat smiled. " I'll come with you for it." I said, " Thank you.. Kyle has only been able to make it to a few because of work". The elevator stops on the second floor and opens. Mom and Debby walk in with their work bags. Debby looked at Kat and said, " Everything good?" Kat smiled and showed her and Mom the ultrasound. Debby said, " Being pregnant is a beautiful thing, and it's a process to go through, but it's so worth it." We smiled at them. Suddenly, we heard a deafening bang followed by a shaking elevator. We brace ourselves, and Mom says with a worried look, " What the hell was that?" The hospital alarm starts blaring. Debby said, " Something has happened". The elevator doors open, and we walk out. I smell smoke, and we follow Debby and Mom to the exit of the parking garage. We walk out and turn, walking to the sidewalk. We all gasp in horror, seeing a blown-up car on the street blazing in flames. Debby exclaims in horror and begins to sob. She said, " Oh god!! That's Terri's car!!". Mom exclaims as she starts crying. Kat and I are both start sobbing, and the Sirens are growing closer. Debby looked across the street and said, " Look!" We looked, and Terri was lying on the hood of a dark green Chevy Tahoe on her back in the back parking lot of the high school across the street. The windshield is busted from her shoes, hitting it. We start walking across the street and are stopped by two male cops. They stand in front of us. Debby said as she sobbed. " She's my friend.." Mom said to the cop as she sobbed. " Is she alive?" She wasn't moving; her head was hanging off the car a little. I can see blood coming out of her right ear. The cop said, " I'm not sure.." He looked back at the other cop, feeling for a pulse on her neck. He said, " Oh my god.. she's alive".. We hear something behind us: the other RN nurses are wheeling a gurney. They look upset when they see it's Terri because they know her. They park it on the sidewalk as the other cop holds it. The first woman gently raises Terri's head up. I see the students gathering in the parking lot. I hear Jesse's voice, and she pushes through the crowd, seeing Terri being put on the gurney. Jesse exclaims, " Mom!!!!!" and starts sobbing. We walk over to her and look back as they wheel the gurney to the entrance of the emergency room. Debby is hugging Jesse as she sobs. Brandon is crying as he looks at them taking her away. He said, " Is she?" I said as I dried my eyes," She's alive, but she's hurt." Jesse said, " How bad?" Mom said, " We're not sure." We look at what's left of the car as a fire truck pulls up. Two men pull the hose out and spray the water at the fire. Jesse said as she cried, " How did this happen?" Debby said, " By the looks of it, this wasn't an accident.. someone wanted Terri dead". Jesse said as she cried, " This has Kelly written all over it." We heard a voice from across the street: " Debby! Ann!" We looked back at one of the RNs standing on the sidewalk. Mom and Debby rush across the street, and we follow them inside the hospital lobby. We hear a struggle going on and look at Terri sitting up on the gurney, fighting with the other nurses as they try to stop her from getting up. Debby said, " What happened?" The woman said, " She woke up and started freaking out." A male RN ran up with a syringe and grabbed Terri, trying to inject her with something to calm her down. She was dazed from the blast, but she was not missing any limbs, so she got out of the car in time. Terri exclaims as she kicks the man in the chest, and he hits the floor on his butt. Mom and Debby ran up, and Terri yelled, " Where's Jesse and Brandon!!?? Where are they?!!" she was crying. Debby said, " They're fine, Terri.. they are right here". Terri focused her eyes to look at them and said to them, " Are you guys okay?" Jesse walked up and said as she cried, " Yes.. we weren't in the car with you.. Mom.. you're hurt let them help you".. Terri said as blood oozed out of her ear " I'm fine.. I just have a headache".. Mom said " Terri.. you're not.. let them help you".. Terri looks at Debby. She said, " Terri.. please".. Terri lays back on the gurney and holds her head as she groans. She sarcastically said, " This is a great way to turn 40". Debby said, " We'll be out here waiting for you". Terri told us, " I love you guys.." They wheel the gurney back, the woman scans her ID, and the doors open. Debby, Mom, Jesse, and Brandon stayed there, and I took Kat home and went to my house to wait for Kyle and for them to call me and let me know how Terri was doing.
