Practise went really well. Great, in fact, compared to the last time he saw them all. They were all working hard and their skills really shone. Noya was doing amazing with his receives and Asahi was putting more confidence into his serves. Tsuki was really improving on his read blocking, and even Hinata didn't receive with his face half as much as usual.
He watched them with eyes that were more alive and alert than they had been when he was last in the gym, and he felt a small spark inside him wanting to pick up a volleyball. But would his head agree with his heart? He sighed, not wanting to know the answer to that question.
The morning practise flew by and before the setter knew it he was walking up the stairs to the first year corridor. He felt a little nervous, not looking forwards to the glances and questions he would most likely receive. Tsuki saw one of his clenched fists and subtly brushed the back of his hand against it; they joined their hands together and Kageyama let out a quiet breath he didn't realise he was holding.
Yamaguchi and Hinata went ahead, giving the pair a moment to themselves.
"You can always text me, remember?"
"That's kinda against the rules."
"We've already done it."
"True... I just don't-"
"Want to bother me? Damn Kags, now I'm starting to act like a parrot. You. Are not. A burden." Tsuki emphasised. "To me. Nor to anyone else. Okay?"
"Okay. It's just difficult."
"I know it is. And I'm not giving up on you."
The setter looked up and saw determination in Tsuki's eyes. He was about to say thankyou but remembered the blond's words, so went for something else instead.
"Then I guess you're stuck with me. A King having to deal with a lowly commoner. How tiresome." he said in a fake bored voice.
Tsuki grinned and pulled him into a hug, knowing Tobio would be comfortable in the empty stairwell.
"That's my King."
Kageyama smirked at the older before pulling away and dragging the blond to his classroom, not wanting either of them to be late on his first day back. He said he would see him at breaktime if he wasn't asleep- this made the blond laugh a little- before entering his classroom with a deep breath.
When he slid open the door, the first person that greeted him was his teacher, welcoming him back excitedly and telling him they was proud for completing so much work whilst off. He brushed it off, saying he had lots of free time, but the teacher opposed by saying he had improved very much. This brought a small smile to his face as he went to his seat in the back of the class.
The next person he met was Hinata, who had moved desks so he was right next to Kageyama. The ginger told him the class were beginning to put together a get well soon card and gift basket due to him being off for so long. He was surprised by the kind act, but when his classmates came over one by one saying they were glad he was back in school, he again felt that feeling of belonging and community that was so important to him.
There were questions asked about what had happened and if he was really sick, but luckily Hinata diverged most questions so he didn't have to explain much, knowing Kageyama grew anxious when pressured. The setter had never appreciated having Hinata by his side so much until now; for once he was grateful for his loud mouth.
Once everyone resumed their seats, the teacher began the first class of the day: science. Kageyama sighed but took out his notebook and textbook, ready to make notes on the most boring topic imaginable. Why did they have to learn about plants? Sports science would be much more interesting.
The morning passed by uneventfully, but Kageyama was pleased with himself when he remembered the equation for photosynthesis correctly and spoke up in class only stuttering once. Hinata was in awe, saying that spending so much time with Tsuki was making him smarter. This earned him a kick on the ankle, and the setter saying he wasn't that stupid he just didn't study enough.
When the bell for break went, Kageyama was focusing on finishing up his work. So, when a hand placed itself on his shoulder he jumped a little.
