Kageyama managed to get through his afternoon classes without falling asleep or getting into another panic. As soon as the bell rang signalling the end of the day, the teen quickly packed up his things, saying he would go to the gym whilst Hinata headed off to the bathroom, singing a very weird song.
The setter took a moment to relax in the empty hallway- their class had been let out a minute or so earlier than the others it seemed- and he enjoyed the view of the red-leaf covered school grounds, alongside the blue-grey sky. Allowing himself this moment to relax, he headed down the stairs and across the pathway to the gym, finding nobody was there yet but the net was still up.
He put his bag down on the bench and headed over to the storeroom. Taking a deep breath in and out he opened it up and headed inside, emerging a moment later with a single volleyball. He bounced, tossed and spun it a few times, enjoying the familiar feeling of the slightly heavy weight in his hands.
Looking around to make sure there was nobody in sight, he walked up to the backline of the court, and focused his gaze on the opposite side of the net. He shut his eyes and imagined himself throwing the ball up, running forwards, jumping high, and slamming his palm down, sending the ball over to smash onto the floor across the net. He opened his eyes and looked down at the volleyball in his hands.
His mind was ready, he knew what he wanted to do, but his body seemingly didn't want to cooperate; so he stood there, just looking at the other side of the court. That is until a voice pulled him out of his trance.
"Didn't think you'd be here first."
"Hey Kei, I was... wasn't-"
"You want to give it a go, right?" the blond asked as he dropped his bag by Kageyama's and joined him on the court, following his gaze to across the net.
"I don't know. What if-"
"Tobio, you've been playing volleyball your whole life. You're not going to suddenly be a failure because of taking a few weeks off."
Kageyama sighed and spun the ball once more, the friction heating his hands up.
"I believe in you." the blond said before stepping back and leaning against the wall, gesturing for the younger to serve.
"Right."
As Kageyama focused once more, it seemed his whole demeanour changed. He raised the volleyball to eye level and his eyes narrowed, an intensity emerging in them. He inhaled, exhaled, then threw the ball up. He ran forwards and jumped high, not having to look up to know the ball was about to reach his palm, and swung his arm forwards. His palm connected with the ball and sent it skimming over the net, ricocheting off the floor just before the back line.
His shoes hit the floor and he watched the ball bounce off the wooden floorboards a few times before rolling to a stop against the wall. He took another deep breath in and out, the smallest smile on his face.
