Akaashi and Kageyama walked to a small café that afternoon where they spent the time mindlessly chatting about whatever came to mind. Tobio felt at ease with the older setter and so when they found a quiet spot in the local park, a bench surrounded by plenty of shady trees, he told Akaashi the events that had unfolded the last few weeks. From his parents' actions and addictions, to the arrest and the nerve-wrecking phone call.
Akaashi stayed quiet whilst Kageyama spoke, only nodding or humming to signal he was paying attention. The silence continued for a few moments after Tobio had finished, and the younger setter sighed and took a long drink of his Boba to let Akaashi digest everything.
"So that was not what I was expecting." the second year concluded.
"Yeah, that's what everyone else has said."
"It's just... just so cruel. I would say I'm sorry but I can tell that you don't want my pity, nor need it. You're strong for telling me this and I'm thankful that you can trust me. Does anyone else know outside of Karasuno, bar me?"
"Kuroo and Kenma."
"Kenma figured things out?" Akaashi guessed, knowing Kenma's analytical brain probably figured everything out the moment he saw Kageyama.
"He did. It kind of scared me how fast... but I'm glad it's them who know and not someone who would go around telling everyone. That's the last thing I want."
"Mhm, I understand. So, what is the plan now? Are your parents going to court?"
"The court process has actually been pretty quick. From what the Detective told me the judge expressed there was no doubt of their abuse even if they did plead not guilty. The sentence is pretty long but I don't really know how long. I sorta panicked during the phone call so Kei had to take over."
"Kei?"
"O-oh, Tsukishima. Uh..." Kageyama blushed and looked down at his drink, cursing himself for the slip up.
"Are you two dating?"
"Yeah. It was kind of unexpected but it's been... nice."
"I'm not really one for words either, so I get it. Being with Bokuto is kinda like that, sometimes I question what is going on but then I just rely on his and mine feelings and I don't need to say anything."
"You and Bokuto?! So you really are together!"
"Yeah. I understand many people have speculated since we've never officially announced it."
"How does Bokuto not express his undying affection for you every moment of the day?" the first year asked, imagining the ace to be the kind of person for grand and cheesy romantic gestures.
"Bokuto wanted to tell everyone the second I said yes to dating. But I told him I didn't want that and he said 'That's okay Keiji, can I call you Keiji? I'm just super happy you said yes!' and that was that."
"But you do notice how long he just gazes at you, right? Everytime we practise together, even I can notice how much he watches you."
"I notice. It is sort of endearing, I suppose."
"Kei is like that. Neither of us are exactly the type for big romantic gestures or cheesy dates, I mean we haven't exactly had the time with everything going on, but I know he's always watching out for me."
"Do you like it?" Akaashi asked seriously, understanding that Kageyama was usually so self-reliant.
"Honestly, I do. My whole life it's been about watching out for my sister and I, since nobody else except for our grandfather cared to get close to us. Then the past few years have been a living nightmare so I was always thinking ahead."
"And?"
"And it's nice to stop and appreciate things every so often. Even if we just go out for drinks or stay home and watch a film, it's nice to not have to worry about anything other than that moment. I really appreciate him, I just hope he knows that."
"I'm sure he does. Tsukishima is similar to you, where you don't always express yourself and your feelings, but these past few days I've seen more emotion on his face than ever before. You've brought out a good side to him."
"That's what he said."
Akaashi nodded and stood up, offering a hand to Tobio. The younger male accepted and they made their way back to the school for dinner, not wanting their teams to get too worried. They had been gone for a few hours yet to Kageyama it felt like they had grown a lot closer; his chest felt lighter now that he had confessed and understood his feelings with the help of Akaashi, who was so wise and honest.
