Two weeks later : The day after the nursery was finally finished, Paul had just walked in with a load of laundry and found Tommy curled up on his side. "Baby!"
"I'm fine. I just felt the babies moving and it hurts."
Paul had gotten together Tommy's hospital bag a week ago just in case. He had also packed a bag for the triplets and himself. He had barely gotten the laundry put away when Tommy cried out in pain and turned pale.
"Paul! I'm hurting! I think.....oh no, my water broke!"
Paul calmly got Tommy changed and into the car. He called Gene on the way to the hospital.
"It's...only...September. They're...too...early!" panted Tommy. "Ow!!!"
In his soothing voice, Paul told Tommy everything would be okay. "You're probably far enough along that everything will be fine." "We're 30 weeks. Breathe!"
Gene was waiting at the hospital entrance for them. He carried Tommy inside while Paul parked.
"Hey, kid, take deep breaths. Deeeepppp breaths!"
Tommy was taken to the maternity ward and hooked up. He clutched his stomach as every contraction came. His hands were white soon. He felt the coolness of Paul's wedding band soon as Paul clasped his hand.
"It's going to be over soon. Sh."
Two hours later the contractions stopped. He had been given a sedative to calm him down. The doctor hooked him up to a monitor for the rest of the night. "If the contractions get closer, we will induce the babies." "Thirty two weeks is far enough along." He stepped out before Paul stopped him.
Paul stared in shock. "No. Thirty weeks, right?" "Tom's only seven and a half months, not eight."
"No, Mr. Thayer is eight months, not seven and a half." "Either he got the dates mixed up or was given the wrong date."
Paul felt Gene's hand on his shoulder. "Don't you dare even suggest that you're not the father. You are, got it?"
"I've already told Tom that I'm fine with the fact. He thinks they're mine, let's leave it there." "I've known for awhile because I wasn't with him eight months ago. We only slept together six and a half ago."
"I know that, Paul. You better hope for his sake, Goldilocks doesn't lay claim to them."
"Like hell he will! Tom's my husband with my last name!"
"Lord, calm down!" sighed Gene.
"Look, as long as he never finds out, everything will be okay."
Paul headed back to the room. Tommy was thankfully asleep.
