There was a time where Merlin had believed at Arthur's arrival would come. Yet after many years (note almost by now 250 years) he felt the male would never arrive. Why else would it take Arthur that long?
Either way, Merlin gave up. There was no reason not to believe that Arthur would never be back. The time changed and with this new threats arose. Those that he thought would never come back and he dreaded this all, as once more witch/sorcerer haunts appeared. This started soon as the plague wreaked havoc, one that people started to call black plague. The reason why people started to believe was because of it getting worse.
Those that started it -the church- thought it was against the will of God and started to arrest, torture and haunt those down. They were thinking that this illness was magic made and a reminder of Camelot where his kind was haunted because of them being corrupted.
Now once more Merlin had to be careful or he would end up being caught, interrogated until he would tell them that he was a sorcerer -which wasn't true, he is a warlock after all- with a lot of pain involved. He despised that this was happening again.
Once more he was helpless knowing that he could not help all of those or else it would end up as these poor souls that got either drowned or burned alive. Another reminder of Camelot. It was not all bad in the times that he had lived in Camelot, but people like him were killed even when they done good, like healing or using their magic for good.
His body winced as he heard the pained filled screamed of the female that was being right now burned alive. The pastor told some excuse to do this again.
The reason was because of her being found plucking some herbs. This was bullshit as they were used for medicine and usually Physician doing the same thing, but they were males and most males were not targeted but females.
Wasn't this anyway against god's will? Like, there was this ten thingy that told rules what God didn't want and one of those were killing, yet they done exactly this. This irked him and he was seeing those as hypocrites.
Merlin was also uncertain that in the bible there is one mentioning of witch craft being against god's will. Not that he had ever read the bible, because of this. Why should he when it caused death of innocent people. Even some of his kind. He also heard some point exactly this out.
For him this was bullcrap, that their god would want this. This all made no sense at all. Merlin was just so done with everything. Not just that people are dying of an illness, then there was the burnings of people and him not being able to die. God he missed his friends.
Merlin wanted his friends back, but the most he needed was Arthur. That dollop head was someone that he missed that much that it pained his heart.
Yet he knew that there would be no way that anyone of his friends would come back, after all they had never been mentioned. Merlin felt lost and had stopped believing in Arthur arriving back. Sometimes it would be easier to give up. In his eyes Albion long-needed him, yet he had not come at all. Merlin needed him. Without Arthur or his friends, he felt lost and realized this as he was now all alone.
A sigh escaped and he seen that they were not even buried and some even did not get this kind of privilege. It was a thing that made him wonder what they were going to do with that many corpses. That was until he seen them burn the pile of corpses with those that ended getting killed because of them having magic.
A thing that he made him feel sad for not just the dead, but also the family. A reason why he always made sure to do this, without anyone knowing this. Even with their name when he had that. There was no way that he would let this one be. They deserved at least this.
Either way he knew that there was not much he could do, and so he tried to help some escape with their family. It was the least he could do. Another thing that he started to help with was healing those that caught the illness. Either that or making sure to soothe some of their pain. Of course, he knew that this was risky, but by this point he was not caring enough any longer.
