Merlin entered Camelot. No smile was seen on his face and it seemed odd and none knew what was going on. He knew and felt his heart still broken. Because he lost his best friend. Not just had he been rejected -who could blamer Arthur for this- but also, he lost the person he loved. It was now that he realized this. It's too late now as he knew that he won't be back in a while, when even he would come back.
The worst of this all was; that there needed to be someone who will take over the throne. Gwen was out of question as the king and her had ended up breaking up 6 months prior. He entered the council meeting soon and avoided everyone's gaze.
"Arthur Pendragon died." He said with softness, sorrow, and regret. "I was too late and couldn't safe him." This time his gaze was going over to the council.
All were silent for a moment and he was getting nervous, not sure what their reaction would be. Because he did after all fail to protect their king. A regret that he would forever hold onto him. But this wasn't the only regret, but that he hadn't told Arthur his feelings and that he should have told Arthur earlier about his magic. This was now something that he regretted dearly.
"That is unfortunate." One of the old council members said.
"Arthur had made a scroll for the case of his early passing." It was said with the same sorrow. "We weren't sure why but after investigating we all heard about this person good deeds. Everyone seemed to like this person." It was added soon afterward.
Merlin had no idea who his king had chosen but he was sure that whoever the next king would be, would have a good heart. That was what he believed in and so he waited for the answer, one that he had not expected.
"He has chosen you as the new king."
"Hold up me. But why? I am just a servant and have no royal blood in me." He was astonished why Arthur chose him. It came unexpected and he felt even guiltier because he had hidden about his magic and he still could see the betrayed look that Arthur had when he showed him about his magic. It was hurting him a lot and he wished that he would have told him earlier.
"Because many people told us that you helped many others. We even consider legalizing magic. Maybe this will give peace to people who have magic." It was said with a calm voice.
His eyes stared at the people in front of him and he wasn't sure. Because for him he wasn't a king but just a commoner and he doesn't deserve to be one.
"I don't know..." He said softly and avoiding everyone's gaze because how can he be king after he failed his king. It was just no possible, and he couldn't stop thinking about it. Couldn't stop himself from thinking that he couldn't accept this.
"I am sorry, but I don't deserve this." He said and looking up now to see everyone have an understanding gaze.
"Alright, when your ready you know where to find us." He heard a new council member say. With this, he turned around. His heart longed for the male. Long for the person, he loved and held so dearly. The person who was the other side of the same coin. But he died and he felt heartbroken. When Arthur died in his arms a part of him went dying as well.
So, he continued each day to clean Arthur's room and continued helping out Gaius. Because even when Arthur wasn't there, he still could feel closer when being in the room of his king. But he felt helpless knowing that it could take years over year hundreds for him to come back.
This was something that he trusted, and he could just hope that Kilgharrah had been right. But it wasn't meaning that it wasn't hurting him a lot. The others tried to make him talk but he always said the same sentence 'I am fine,' even when he wasn't fine.
