Roman was just plain exhausted, but it was the kind of exhaustion that kept a person awake until 3 in the morning. The kind that no sleep would help. Roman watched as Virgil walked out along with Remus, and the rest of them tried to calm down their emotions. After a moment, Roman followed. Standing and moving out of the doorway to gently close it behind him, the twin moved away from the door and looked down at his hands.
He tried to focus on the bubbling feeling of heat in his chest, and thought about the heat growing and spreading until it reached his hands. He watched his palm begin to glow, until the light spread into his fingers. After a moment, the sparks of a flame flickered in his hand. He focused on the flame until it grew to the size of a small fire, before calling to his brother and Virgil.
“Check it out!” Roman said, holding the baby flame in his hand. He had to give it a lot of thought to maintain its size, so he mainly just stood there and held it while his brother and friend gave him a thumbs up.
“Roman,” Logan said as he left the room as well, followed closely by Patton, then Janus a few steps behind. “I was unaware this was something you could do.”
“I know.” Roman smiled lightly. “I only learned today, but I figured we could all use a bit of a distraction.”
“That is kind.” Logan said, and Roman watched as a pen and notepad suddenly flew over from across the room and landed softly in Logan’s hands. “I will have to make note of this.”
“Did you make a note of that too?” Roman pointed with his free hand, watching the small fire sputter a bit.
“Yes, I did.”
“Anyways,” Patton said, moving past Logan to stand by him better. “We came out here to give you your phone. Your mom called.”
The fire died instantly. “Oh. Can you check calls and texts from in here?”
“Yes, we tested it before you and Virgil arrived.” Logan nodded as Patton handed Roman his phone.
“Thanks.” Roman said, taking his phone and seeing his mother had left a rare voicemail. He clicked on it and put the phone to his ear.
“Roman, this is your mother. I went to check your room, but you weren’t there. We need to talk. Please call me, and I will drive over and get you.” there was a bit of silence, before a small shudder came through the phone. “I love you.”
Roman pulled his hand back down, saving the message to his phone. “I know I was gonna say that we could stay longer, but-”
“But you didn’t tell your mom.” Janus shook his head. “Go on. Take Remus with you. We all need to be going home soon.”
The others all nodded, and looked to Roman. “Okay. Well, let’s all try to come back tomorrow then. Actually practice. No one bring that book home with them for now.”
“What?” Logan looked surprised. “Why?”
“Because it’s important we all read through this together, and I don’t want others seeing this. Not to mention, I can’t see any future chapters being more pleasant, and I want us all to have our support systems nearby when we read through these. At least for now.” He added at the end for Logan’s benefit.
Logan frowned, but still conceded. “Fine.”
“Thank you.” Roman said. “Now everyone out for the night.” He ushered them all to head over to Remus, who was walking back with a confused expression. Roman gave him the signature, “we need to go” look, and his twin didn’t push, instead reopening the portal and letting everyone step through, following behind Roman before closing it.
