TW: Mentions of murder. Also the whole "mom talk" soooo.
Roman hung up with Virgil after making sure Virgil hadn’t been in immediate danger. He’d told his boyfriend to call him if something went wrong, or when the military had finally left. However, as soon as they’d hung up on each other, Roman wanted to call him right back. He wished he could be there to make sure everything was okay, or at least give Virgil the “tactical cuddles” he was wanting. Admittedly, Roman wanted them too. Instead, he was standing by the entrance while waiting for Remus to finish saying his goodbyes with Janus. Patton and Logan were waiting by the entrance too, having come by after the first text to check on everyone.
“Remus, come on dude! We’re gonna be late!”
“Fuck off! You got your boyfriend time, I get mine!” Remus quipped, but still gave Janus a final hug and jogged over to meet Roman. “Okay, what’s the plan?”
“You know about me being a ranger. You aren’t one. What else is there?”
“Yeah, I know that. What’s the plan about getting back? I don’t have the money for an uber all the way there, and if we just show up, she’ll get suspicious.”
“Fair.” Roman paused for a moment to think. “Can you teleport us to Dad? I have enough to go from there to the house.”
Remus nodded. “Yeah. It’s been a while anyways.” He opened the sanctuary, and Roman stepped out. He waited, before his brother grabbed hold of his shoulder and they jumped to their dad’s grave. They both paused. His headstone was finally in, and The beginnings of grass were beginning to grow over the dirt. Roman read the epitaph.
Here lies Mark Dukes. Loving father. Kind soul. Good man.
Roman now understood why it didn’t mention him being a husband. It didn’t make the reality of what it meant any easier though. He wished he had seen the signs, noticed how little his parents really talked, but he hadn’t. Roman still remembered that day. He and Remus had just come back from a field trip to some museum. His dad had been acting oddly that morning, but Roman assumed it was because of their dad not being a chaperone for the trip. He’d told the twins that they had to have a conversation when they got back, but when Roman had opened the door, his dad had been laying on the floor of the entryway. Roman remembered giving his brother a hard shove to keep him from going in, before calling his mom in a panic.
“Roman.” Remus said, looking at him with tears in his eyes. “Can we go?”
“Y-yeah.” Roman nodded shakily, wiping tears from his eyes as well. He pulled out his phone, requesting an uber and seeing as one accepted. “Come on, let’s wait up at the entrance.”
“Okay.” Remus nodded, “Bye Dad.”
“Yeah. Bye Dad.” Roman said, turning and walking with his brother towards the front.
The car didn’t take long, nor did the trip. Roman sat in the backseat again, struggling to forget about the drive home from the funeral. It had been so similar. Roman thanked the driver as she pulled up to their driveway, and handed her a tip with the cash he always kept in his wallet. Then they’d gotten out, and saw their mom’s car was in the garage.
“Surprised she isn’t at her fucking lab.” Remus muttered.
“Cool it. We need to at least hope this works.” Roman fussed, walking towards the door and into their house. “Mom?”
“Roman?” His mother’s voice came from the living room, and Roman watched her come into view. “Oh thank god, you’re both home safe!” She hurried to check them over, but Roman stopped her.
