Pov Nobody
Mabel crouched near the edge of the river, her new beaver senses heightening her awareness of the water's flow and the rustling leaves overhead. Everything felt so different—her body, her instincts. The world seemed larger now, more interconnected. She glanced at Y/n, who, as a hawk, perched silently on a low branch above, ever vigilant. They had come here to learn, to explore this new frontier, but the stakes had escalated far beyond what they'd anticipated.
"I still can't believe it," Mabel said, her voice now a soft chitter. The sensation of speaking as a beaver was still strange to her, but she was adjusting. "We were supposed to be understanding them, helping them. But now... now it feels like we're the ones who need help."
"It's not about us anymore, Mabel," Y/n replied, her voice calm and steady despite the underlying tension. "We've uncovered something much bigger. That scientist... if he succeeds, this whole ecosystem, the animals, everything—it's all at risk."
Mabel slapped her flat tail against the ground, a mix of frustration and fear. The beaver's instincts inside her urged her to fortify, to protect her territory, but the human part of her knew they had to do more than that. "How are we supposed to stop him? We're just... we're just animals now."
Y/n fluttered down to the ground, shifting into her human form as she landed. She placed a reassuring hand on Mabel's small, sturdy shoulder. "We're more than that, Mabel. We're part of this world in a way no human has ever been. That's our strength. We can move unnoticed, gather information, rally the animals. They trust you—they'll listen to you."
Mabel stilled, looking up into Y/n's eyes. The determination she saw there began to stir something within her. "But what if we can't do it? What if we only make things worse?"
Y/n sighed, her hand still resting on Mabel's shoulder. "There's always that risk. But doing nothing is worse. This place, these animals... they need someone to stand up for them. And right now, that's us."
Mabel nodded slowly, the responsibility settling heavily in her chest. She had always loved animals, always wanted to protect them, but she never imagined it would come to this. "You're right," she said, her voice stronger now. "We have to stop him—whatever it takes."
Y/n smiled, a flicker of relief in her eyes. "That's the spirit." She turned back into her hawk form, her wings stretching wide as she prepared to take flight. "We'll find that scientist's lab, and we'll make sure he never harms another animal again."
Mabel shifted back into her human form, her resolve hardening. "And after that, we'll warn the animals. They need to know what's coming. We need to stand together."
"Absolutely," Y/n agreed, flapping her wings in readiness. "But be prepared, Mabel. This could get dangerous. And, honestly... it's going to be a lot of shit to deal with."
Mabel grinned, a newfound confidence steadying her. "I think I'm ready for it."
With that, Y/n took to the sky, her form disappearing into the canopy above. Mabel watched her go, then turned her gaze back to the river. She wasn't just a human anymore, and she wasn't just a beaver. She was both, and she was ready to fight for this world and all its creatures.
