Xia Yao's POV

None other than Yuan Zong, my boss himself, stood infront of me. No words seemed to come out of my mouth. He continued glaring at me.

"Care to explain where you were, assistant?" He asked impatiently, crossing his arms over his chest.

"Uhm, I-I went outside." I didn't dare looking up. Even though I was not afraid of him, there was something so intimidating about Yuan Zong that just made you want to shut up immediately.

"And why is that?"

"I wasn't feeling well." I said bluntly, finally looking into his eyes.

His expression seemed to soften.

"Then why didn't you come to me? Didn't I make myself clear before?! I care about my eployees well being and if something were to happen to you, do you know who was to blame for?" His voice rose slightly.

I shook my head, no.

"Myself. Yes, that's right. Everything has to work in this company, mistakes are not allowed here. How many times do I have to tell you that! Listen to me for once, damn it!" He was angry. Really angry.

"I forgot." I lied.

"What do you mean, forgot!? You are basically a newbie here, I could easily fire you, Xia Yao. I hope you know that!" He was seriously starting to piss me off. And yet I still said nothing.

"Then why don't you?" I challenged, wanting to see his reaction.

"Xia Yao..." He sighed and then continued.

"I can't."

"And why is that?" I asked confused, impatiently waiting for an answer.

"I just can't!"

"There must be a reason as to why-" He stopped me mid-sentence.

"You will find out, soon."

"Why not now? Tell me, sir." I had to admit. It sure was fun provoking him!

"Just get back to work! Now!" He shouted and walked out and into his office.

"Oh and Xia Yao?" I looked at him.

"Yes?"

"Please be careful next time. Okay?" I just nodded and smiled a little. Damn him and his mood swings!

I sighed, going over to my desk and continued sorting out all the files.
For some reason I felt way more energized than before, getting work done much quicker, too.

Managing to work through all 20 files in just half an hour, I went over to Yuan Zong's office.

"Here, sir." He looked up at me, obviously surprised to see me standing there.

"Finished already?" I nodded.

"Good. Did you get back to Marshall's e-mail? He asked for an cooperation with our company. I don't have time to deal with him now." I nodded again.

"And did you tell him no?" And again, I nodded.

"Can you talk, god damn it!" That was the reaction I was waiting for. I nodded again.

"Just get out of my sight and ask Yuan Ru to cancel the meeting we had scheduled in one hour."

"I can do that." I offered. This would have been my first meeting I was going to attend with Yuan Zong. Seemed like I had to wait for a little while more now.

"Alright. Bring me coffee after, will you."

"Of course." I walked out of his office and into mine, making a phonecall with Marshall's assistant.

That's what I didn't really like about work. I was quick with everything, getting work done immediately. Well, today was an exception.

I didn't know what else to do, so I went to my boss and brought him coffee.

I knocked, but got no response. Not knowing what to do, I just went in, without thinking much of it.

I placed his steaming hot mug of coffee on his desk and was about to walk out, when something caught my eye.

A picture frame with a picture in it was on his desk. I recognized Yuan Zong immediately, but not that woman next to him. It couldn't have been Yuan Ru, since the woman on the picture looked older than her, but still very young too. Maybe in her early forties. She was beautiful, I had to admit. I had this weird feeling in my stomach now. Who was this woman and why was she on this picture with Yuan Zong? (A/N: jealousy, maybe? ;))

All of a sudden I heard footsteps behind me. Turning around, I was met with a toned chest and intimidating eyes of Yuan Zong.

"Seems like we've had many encounters today, no?" He smirked. Screw you, Yuan Zong!

"I'm sorry, I just wanted to bring you coffee, since that was what you asked for, sir." I said politely, trying to be calm. I felt like my heart was beating out of my chest!

"I was just wondering, who is that woman on this picture?"

"No one." Feeling embarrassed, I was about to walk out, when he placed his hand on my shoulder.

"That woman is my mother." NO WAY! I could not believe him. She looked so young! She couldn't have been his mother, right?! I mean, she looked younger than him, almost!

My eyes widened.

"Wait, really? No way..." I was still amazed. Wow!

"Yes. That was the last picture we had taken together, before she passed away almost 5 years ago. Time sure does fly by." He didn't even show a hint of emotion, though I could see through his facade. He was a tough guy, but actually very sensitive and caring in the inside. Who would have thought! I really wanted to know about his dad, too, but that could wait for another more appropriate time.

"I'm sorry to hear that, sir. I apologize for bringing it up." I said sincerely.

"It's fine, Xia Yao. You couldn't have known."

Silence followed. An oddly calming silence, not an awkward one.

"She is beautiful. Your mother, I mean."

"She was, yes. Always concerned about other peoples well being, too." He sighed and stared on the picture for a while.

"Just like you." My eyes widened, realizing what I just said.

"Is that so..." He slowly walked towards me. Oh no. Why was he doing that?

"Uhm... I'm done with work. Is there anything else you want me to do, sir?" I quickly changed the topic.

"Many things." He whispered.

"I'm sorry?"

"Nothing. Just sit there and look pretty, okay?"

What.

...........

Smooth, Yuan Zong 😉
