RYAN POV
"Kai hurry up before we miss the bus!" I yelled running as fast as my legs will allow me to. But Kai was slowly following behind me. The bus slowly moved past me. I came to a full stop watching the yellow bus disappear. Which meant we would have to call dad or walk home. Kai finally caught up with me. "Damn we missed the bus!".
"No shit! If you would run faster we could've made it" I said.
"Now what?" He asked.
"We can call dad or walk" I said. Kai and I looked at each other "walk" we said in unison. Luckily, our school wasn't that far. It was a good twenty minute walk depending what streets you took. "Let's go through the city. So we can go to the store" Kai suggested.
About fifteen minutes later we reached the city. Kai wasted no time going into the store. He grabbed a water and chips. I needed sugar. We went to the back of the store so I could decide what candy I wanted. "Ryan? Isn't that the same man who was at Salem's birthday?". Peeking over the shelf to see who Kai was referring to. Noticing the older man... "yeah he was there. Isn't he dad's dad?" I asked. Kai looked at me and nodded "He's the one who brought the brownies that mom couldn't eat. It had nuts. She's allergic".
"Oh yeah! That's right. But why is he taking to moms dad". Wait? Wasn't he locked up? When did they let him out? And why these two speaking?. Kai and I just watched. When they left we paid for our things and continued the five minute walk home. "Should we tell dad about what we saw?" Kai asked.
"No! We don't really know what was being said. We don't want to alarm dad for no reason" I said.
"How about mom?" He asked.
"She's worse. Very dramatic. Let's just see if we run into them again then..." I said. Kai didn't question me. He shrugged "okay... but I have my eye on dad's dad".
"Me too, me too. Let's go do our homework" we both walked to our room. Closing the door we got started on our homework. Not even ten minutes later Salem bust through our door and ran to hug Kai. "Oh come on! I'm doing homework!".
"Kai I missed you" she smiled.
"Salem? How come you never miss me?" I asked.
"I like Kai better! Sorry" she said. Well damn... I got up and left these two alone. My mom was helping Harlow with her. "Hey mom!" I said. She looked up at me "hey Ryan! Look how tall you're getting. Come here!". Rolling my eyes cause she always does this.
"Mooommmm!!!' Come on!" I whined. She walked over to me she always and I mean always runs her fingers through my hair. "Such a big boy now!. Can you and Kai stop growing?". Actually my mom besides myself is the only one who can touch my hair. "I see you've been taking care of your curls".
"Of course! I have to make sure I look good" I joked. She smiled "such a jokester!". Just watching my mom all those memories of all she's been through flooded back. She deserved happiness now. "What?" She asked.
"Nothing" I said.
"Since your birthday is coming up. The big one three! What do you have in mind?" She asked.
I shrugged "I don't know. Honestly I rather lay low" I said.
"Such a mature thing to say. Lord, I can't handle you boys growing up" she said. Feeling the urge to hug my mom... she loved when we hugged her. Sometimes I think she needs the hugs more than we do.
My dad walked in "How cute!".
"Don't hate cause Ryan shows me love" my mom teased.
"Ryan has always connected with you more than me" my dad said.
"Not true! Mom and I just have more in common" I said. Harlow grabbed onto mom getting her attention. Even though I don't show it but I love my little sisters. Salem may not care too much for me but I'll protect her just like I protect my mom.
"I'm going to get back to doing my homework" walking back to my room. Salem was still in there just watching kai's phone. I don't really know if he did that so she would be quiet... cause not the case.
"Kai look?!" She yelled showing him his phone. Every couple of seconds it was "Kai look?". When my mom called Salem so they could leave I was relieved and so was Kai. Quietness fell over the house again once my mom left.
My dad leaned on our door frame "I'm not cooking so how about we order pizza?".
"Sounds good to me" I said. When the pizza arrived our dad called us to eat. We all sat at the table "How was school today?".
"Other than missing the bus home... great" Kai said.
"You missed the bus? And you didn't call me?!" He asked.
"We wanted to walk home. It was a nice day out" I said.
"True, but next time call me and I'll come to pick you guys up" he said.
"When will mom move back in?" I asked.
"Not right now. But soon" he said. Just hearing that brought a smile to my face. That's all I want is my parents to be happy together.
