5 - A Kiss From the Sun

"The Sun and the Moon, though infatuated with each other, had never felt the touch of the other.

During the day, the Sun sat perched upon a cloud that he could never leave, as he could not manipulate the clouds and the drop down would be an instant fatality.

He drifted throughout the sky, from one end of the earth to another, bringing the bright sun with him to cover the mortal realm and all of its inhabitants in a fresh glow.

The Moon, meanwhile, wandered the earth by foot, pulling the moon along with them to quietly cover the world in a blanket of darkness, symbolizing the time to rest.

The Sun and the Moon only saw each other each time the day started and each time the night began, and they could only converse for a short while. 

They had known each other for all eternity, talking to each other during that short while and getting to know each other better. For instance, the Sun preferred the cold and had with them a parasol at all times, and the Moon enjoyed reading, even though they could only do so once they got close enough to the sun.

After some time, they had developed feelings for each other, and the Moon had confessed to the Sun from their place on the ground. The Sun had blushed a bright pink, the dawn changing colors to match.

Though they had committed their romantic interests to each other, the two had never touched each other or been up close, and they only ever got to see each other for a few moments every day and night.

Both the Sun and the Moon missed each other greatly, but knew not how to see each other. So for years, decades, and centuries, they merely said their hellos and farewells, and exchanged words of affection before passing by.

One night, the Sun was perched up on their cloud, gently smiling up at the sky when he saw that the dawn was coming. Hu Tao, overseer of the Dawn, was dancing up in the sky on her own sea of clouds, coloring the sky in purples, blues and pinks.

"I'm still waiting for blue, orange and yellow." Chongyun said softly as he watched the colours get to know each other, blending to created a million shades.

"Aiya Chongyun, I told you I'll do it one day! And besides, you only want those colours because they remind you of Xingqiu~"

Hu Tao's cheery laugh filled the sky as she finished her job and stood back to gaze at it.

"Y'know, you're really lucky, getting to see your lover boy and all. I've never even seen Yanfei." Hu Tao said before turning to look at him.

"Oh, give this to her. I wrote it for her yesterday."

She pulled out a tied up piece of paper and tossed it on the air a few times before she threw it down for him to catch.

Hu Tao gave Chongyun letters to give to Yanfei, overseer of the Sunrise, and he delivered them to her in the morning. Then Yanfei would give him letters for Hu Tao, and he'd deliver them to the other girl, and the cycle would start again.

Even though Chongyun found her peculiar, Hu Tao and him bonded over their unfortunate circumstances. Every night before Xingqiu arrived, they'd chat for a short while, then she would disappear again until the next night.

"Well, my job here is done. Farewell!" Hu Tao called down to him. With a spin she disappeared, leaving Chongyun with the letter.

Chongyun held onto it tightly, waiting for the time go pass until he saw the Moon.
