As Jeno sits behind his desk pouring over the end of the month budget reports he was sent, his stomach lets out a noise letting him know he should stop and take a lunch. He won't though. He absolutely hates this time of the month. Sure he's the ceo and he has people under him that do the grunt work but he still has to check things over and make sure it all lines up. He has to compare last month's numbers to make sure nothing is too far off. If there is a significant jump in either direction, he then has to have that department go over the numbers again to make sure it is correct before then investigating the reason for the major differences. Obviously in business there are ups and downs each month, that's normal, but anything over a twenty five percent increase or decrease that is unexpected, warrants a recheck.
He's part way through when he can't take it anymore. He calls his receptionist to his office and is met with an immediate response. He smiles warmly upon seeing him. Renjun is always on top of everything he needs, he's so attentive and quick to do any task given. Even the most mundane of things. Renjun and him go way back really, they were in the same friend group in middle school and by high school, they were inseparable. Renjun didn't follow him off to college, his mother was sick and he had no other choice than to stay home and take care of her so his dad could keep working. It was an awful year for him.
After she passed, he knew he needed to get into the workforce and started working at a convenience store. Him and Jeno were still in contact but after a few years they drifted further apart. A year after Jeno had taken over his father's spot as CEO of their family's beauty corporation, Jeno was doing a tour of convenience stores to see the layout for some of their cheaper makeup brands. His heart thudded hard in his chest when he saw his best friend more tired and run down than he ever has. It broke his heart to see him standing on his feet for eight to ten hours a day. After reigniting their friendship through constant texts and phone calls, he offered him a job as his new receptionist. Renjun was hesitant at first, thinking he wouldn't have the skill set but Jeno promised him extensive on the job training. He couldn't be happier to have his best friend back in his life.
"Good afternoon Jeno, is there something I can help you with?" Jeno scoffs.
"You really don't have to be that formal all the time, you know." Renjun sighs while shaking his head. They've had this discussion so many times already but Renjun can only be this way with him while at the office. He feels it's a sign of respect for his position.
"Yeah, yeah. I get it." Jeno says with an eye roll as he sees Renjun's stern expression.
"I was just wondering if you had a little time to go to the break room and make me a coffee?" Renjun frowns, then raises his brow to show he sees right through him.
"You didn't eat lunch, did you?" Jeno looks down.
"Been busy." Renjun shakes his head and walks out without another word. He walks back in within a half hour with a nice hot lunch from the restaurant across the street, an iced americano and a smile.
Jeno tries to hide his smile but fails.
"Thank you. You always take such good care of me." Renjun rolls his eyes playfully.
"Someone has to or you will wither away to nothing." Jeno chuckles then offers his best puppy eyes.
"Will you join me?" Renjun shakes his head.
"I should get back to work." Jeno pouts.
"Please? I don't like eating alone." Renjun sags his shoulders in defeat and sits in the chair across from him. They share a small conversation before it falls into a comfortable silence. Jeno eating while still working and Renjun checking and sending email replies through his phone.
As the day comes to a close Jeno gets a call from his mother via the business line. This usually means it pertains to actual business but this time she throws him for a loop.
"Honey, we have a charity event next month and I would like for you to bring a date." He coughs.
"Mom, I'm not seeing anyone." She chuckles.
"Well, you are young and in your prime and this is your motivation to find someone to bring or I will bring a blind date for you." He sighs into the receiver.
"No thank you, I'll find someone myself."
