sometimes your "help" just pushes the person away
the more you "help" them, the worse the situation becomes
but some people are not smart enough to realize that

You know, there was an interesting essay I read about when helping hurts. Charity is a big thing, yeah? It makes people feel good about themselves (which is so shallow, but hey that's humans for you).
There was this tshirt drive for the foreign poor. People donated clothes for some third world country, where a lot of the peoples were too poor to afford decent clothes. It was a big success, and they were able to clothes hundreds of individuals.
That doesn't seem like a bad idea, right? Well, actually that help hurt. Because it put the local clothing seller out of business.
