she's crying and she won't stop
"shh, baby, it's OK."
her fingers were clench so tight around the steering wheel
I thought her knuckles would stay white forever
but now they were red because she wouldn't stop wringing her hands
"no, it's not!" she sobs "if you hadn't pulled the emergency brake, I would have hit it!"
I rub her back and she leans into my hand so I hold her for a bit
and just let her cry
(it's okay to feel scared sometimes, it's okay to cry)
"I'll drive."
"But--but you c--can't. I'll...I can do it."
"Trust me, I'm a better driver."
"Doctor's orders..."
"We'll be fine, baby. Get in the car, okay?"
"Okay."
"I love you."
"I love you, too."
I place my hand on her knee and everything is back to normal
we sing along to some old eighties music (my choice)
and everything is as it should be
