i'm inhaling textbooks
the printed propaganda
I exhale papers
(MLA format)
I struggle to sound
"academic"
my professors' gnawing teeth
bite at me
the rip out and away
my identity
"listen to the lectures
and show up for class
make sure to take notes
or we'll make sure you don't pass"
extra credit, quizzes, midterms
papers, group projects, study groups
"read this, study that
think this, think that"
my brain cries mercy
it whimpers and blanks
it protests and struggles
it refuses to cooperate
"I need a rest, a relief, a break!"
fall break is only two days long
(big whoop)
and still a week away
but you can bet your life
I'm going to make straight a's
I value my education
no matter the stress
no matter the pain
I want my degree
even if I struggle
in this educational sea
to stay alive, to stay afloat
I know how to swim
and if I can't do that--
I'll build a boat
