Jac rubbed her tired eyes. She was finished later than expected having undertaken complicated surgery which ended with the patient dying on the table. She'd let Fletch know she was running late. It probably would have made sense for her just to ask if Emma could stay and then pick her up in the morning but she realised that the one person she needed to see after the shift she'd had was Fletch so she collected her things and set off to Fletch's
" Hi" Fletch grinned as he opened the door "you look shattered. Cuppa or something stronger? Emma has dozed off on the sofa "
"Erm it has been a horrible shift but I'm driving so better be a cuppa"
"OK"
All was calm in the Fletcher household. The Fletchings were in bed and Emma slept on the sofa with a Peppa pig blanket over her. Fletch had obviously been sitting with her with the tv volume low, a bed time book on the floor beside her and a borrowed teddy in her grasp .
Jac looked at the scene and felt a lump in her throat. It looked so lovely and she was suddenly sad that she'd never experienced such tenderness when she was young. She worried that Emma was missing out on a family being shunted between her and Jonny though she was fiercely loved. Jac wiped away a single tear unaware that fletch was watching her from the doorway. He cleared his throat
"She's been as good as gold. Her and my Ella have hit it off she even let her borrow Alfred" Jac looked puzzled. "The teddy" Fletch explained handing her a steaming mug of tea
"So what's been happening" he said gesturing for her to sit on the  other sofa and taking a seat beside her. Jac was very aware of their close proximity to each other but  told Fletch about her difficult day.
He touched her arm gently " that's rough" he said simply " never gets any easier, losing patients"
She nodded. It was good having someone who understood
