Part 38: The Ultimatum

Momo sat for a while outside after the confrontation. After a time, Todoroki joined her. 

"Are you okay?"

"Not really." Momo was uncharacteristically straightforward. "I feel awful about that. And... I like Shine. I like Wally. I don't want them to go like this... without completing their mission."

"You really believe they are from another world," Todoroki said slowly.

"Of course," Momo said. She tilted her head. "I didn't know what to think at first, but they are just too different. It's the only explanation that makes sense to me, and Shine has a very good grasp of the theory of it. If they were just crazy, I don't think they'd have a concrete idea about it at all. That can't be fake."

Pause. "I think you're right," Todoroki admitted finally. 

"You do?" Momo was stunned.

"Yes... it took a while for me to accept it, and I really don't know how such a thing is possible, but I don't believe it could be fake either. So... I wonder if that means our world is really in trouble."

"I don't know. They haven't told me anything about that," Momo mused, "but Shine was really upset, I could tell. Wouldn't it be horrible if we found out after all this that they were only trying to save us the whole time, and we treated them like a problem?"

"At least your conscience would be clear on that," Todoroki said. He couldn't say the same for himself. "But that is a possibility. It's also possible this other world may want to use us."

"They don't act like that much," Momo said, "I think I'd do just what they did if I was in another world-- try to make friends, and study... and anything really suspicious is just a matter of opinion right now."

"You believe in them so implicitly, when you barely know them," Todoroki noted.

"You think I am being too simple minded?" Momo said uncertainly.

"I was just wondering why. You've never been one to like trouble makers, and they make a lot of trouble."

"I guess I just thought it wasn't their fault," Momo said, "Though, criticizing UA was uncomfortable, but even Iida's done that. It wasn't any reason to panic... Maybe it's foolish of me, but I just... personally, I feel safer around Likstar-san and West-san... more calm. Maybe it's selfish, but I liked that..."

Todoroki thought. "No, I think I felt that way too. That's what made me so wary of them."

"What?" Momo had some reason to look confused.
